Gotta be honest, saw "SRAM XPLR AXS bikes under $2k" online, proceeded to do a spit take, then throw my wallet at my laptop screen. Glad I did. Bike is a pleasant surprise. Steel frame with 2.1 tubeless tires (not stock) really smooth out your ride and this SRAM group is one of the smoothest shifting I've ever used. After some ZIPP-ification and Wolf Tooth bits, bike weighs exactly 26lbs. Not bad. I only deducted a star because of a mis-weld on the seat tube bottle cage mount. Brought that to the attention of State and customer service made things right with some store credit. Lastly, word to the wise, THE 27.5/650b MODELS DO NOT COME WITH TUBELESS CAPABLE TIRES. In my excitement, I didn't read the fine print, but they do say this after the description as well. So, in closing, if you're looking for a budget friendly ride, you like steel, and you have to have the newest in wireless shifting, buy this bike! There's truly nothing else quite like it on the market right now!
The Bike: 5 stars
State Bicycle: 5 stars
My previous purchases from them: 5 stars
This purchasing experience: 3 stars
When you buy from State they send out an email asking for a rating/review. Overall I want to give the entirety of the bike, company, purchasing, etc a 4.5 so I gave it a 4 there and am giving it a 5 here.
Lets start with the bad which is non-characteristic of State:
The bike didn't ship out for almost 10 days after getting my confirmation email. That's long for them and kinda f***cked up my plans for my 2 week trip back home. I upgraded to the carbon fork but it didn't come installed and was in a complete other package for me to take to a shop to get mounted and cut. Other than the fork there were other components I expected to be on and semi-ready to go like the chain and derailleur. They say you don't activate the warranty unless a bike shop puts it together so I guess that's what they wanted. And as usual the box came pretty fucked up. I know that's also likely handling but it seems to happen a lot coming from them.
The Good:
I don't really have any serious complaints about State. For first time buyers, I think they should be aware of the stuff above but I believe them just to be accompanying evils of buying from a brand that cranks out awesome bikes at such a low cost. The customer service and bike-radness more than make up for them. But you want to know about the bike. IT'S SICK. It rides very well and the AXS platform with the upgraded carbon fork make this a seriously capable gravel AND road rig. It's got a great paint job and arrived intact, haven't noticed any miss-welds yet, the carbon fork it a huge weight saving upgrade and has a great shape to it, and the bike as a whole is a wonderfully neutral geometry for someone who wants to do road and gravel. Now you may notice that mine looks a little different... and that's because I spec'd it out ridiculously. So without further ado...
My build:
Frame: 4130 All road (state provided)
Fork: Carbon monster (state provided)
Drivetrain: Full Sram Rival AXS XPLR (state provided)
Wheels: Zipp 303 Firecrest (though the lower 303 S model that state offers is VERY highly rated as well)
Seat post: Zipp service course SL
Bars: Zipp service course SL-70 XPLR
Stem: Zipp service course SL
Tires: Vittoria Terreno Zero (state provided)
Cages: Supacaz Fly Carbon
Tape: Supacaz Galaxy
Saddle: Supacaz Ti Ignite
This 55, with cages and pedals comes in at 22lb and 7oz.
Hope this helped and I highly recommend State (this is my 7th bike from them)
Exactly what I expected, maybe even a little more. Brake lever hoods could fit a little better as could the cable clamps with eTap.
I've taken Matilde on some rippers around the neighborhood as well as on my local tarmac, double & single track. This baby hums. The geometry strikes the ideal balance of stability and suppleness. She rides no handed around corners at speed and will straighten back out smoothly. That touch is only sweeter when your hands are on the bars. I should note that I swapped out the narrower State bars for the wider and more flared bar off my wife’s Poseidon, which made her happier and allows me to really hold lines with a firm hand. The bars are buckled into a 100mm stem that I asked the shop to install instead of the stock 90mm. I'm 5'9' (and a half) and was unsure whether the small was the right choice when I was so close to the Medium frame. Changing the stem and bars stretched the bike to better fit me up at the top of the Small frames height range. The only thing to be mindful of is that the ends of most bars strike the dropped top tube. Tape has been applied to the top tube and rubber bar ends have been ordered. Finally I found the Jungle Breeze cloth bar tape by BTP just works with the Copper Brown and blue label, so I just went with it. After these changes to the cockpit, I love being in the drops on this bike.
I went with the monster fork and so far I love the handling of the bike. I need more time to rate the longevity of the fork, but if this baby holds up then it's well worth the $300 option. I went with 700c wheels, but instead of the Vittorias I strapped on some 44c WTB Raddlers. They're the perfect size for the wheels 21mm internal width. I was really having trouble centering the 6-bolt disks but a couple zip ties pushed the bolts over enough to stop the rubbing in the back. The wheels might be a future upgrade.
But let's be real, this bike is about the steel. The frame feels solid with clean welds at all of the joints. Sure, it's heavier than other materials, but the bike is sure of itself on flowy single track and fast double track downhills. She likes to carve her lines and doesn’t get jittery. It's easy to lift the carbon front end over logs as well as shift weight when cornering. Add a dropper and the technical terrain this bike could handle grows tremendously. I wasn't completely sold on the 165 cranks, but I've had few pedal strikes which is always nice. SRAMs wireless shifting also makes for rapid adapting to the trail. So far the 44t chainring has worked, but I've mostly been riding my neighborhood streets and minimal elevation, but I did take it on some longer chunky climbs and was pleasantly surprised with how well the bike will maintain momentum if you keep pressure on the cranks. I was happy with how well it climbed. Nonetheless, for bikepacking and long sustained hills like I have here in central MA, I'll need a smaller chainring to make the most effective use of the 12spd cassette.
Before ordering I emailed State with a few questions that were quickly answered by Carter. When I screwed up and didn't choose a bottle cage, Chris was kind enough to send me an alloy pair free of charge. Setting up the warranty was super simple, aided by how Fritz's Bike Shop emailed me the receipt. So this purchase has felt good from the get go and has only gotten better now that the bike is here. Overall I'm wicked happy with how I've tweaked the State All Road so that it fits me, which has opened up a wildly fast, flowy, and fun riding. I named her Matilde.
Overall, I am very pleased with the bike. The groupset is the star of this bike and it blows expectations away. I am 6'5" and I think that saying the large frame size can support a rider of my height is a stretch. My seat post is very high and I am on the market for a long stem. Minor weld issues in some places, including one at the bottle cage that results in the cage sitting at an angle. Still a great bike for the price.
Great bike. Was a a little worried about frame quality just with the price point but no complaints here! 1x12 e tap is glorious!! Don’t like the stock seat but that’s more personal preference. Can’t wait to keep grinding out miles!
I have been riding bikes my entire life but started biking seriously about 12 years ago. I have a very high-end road bike and high-end fat bike. However, I have been looking for a decent entry level gravel bike. After much research I purchased the 4130 All Road XPLR AXS from State Bicycle Company as an all-purpose gravel, road, and fitness bike.
My research indicated that most purchasers of the 4130 All Road were extremely happy with the bike. However, there were several reviewers who had very negative comments about the bike. With this in mind, I was prepared to be disappointed with the bike.
Upon delivery, I immediately took the 4130 All Road to a local bike shop for assembly to ensure I would receive the State warranty. The shop assembled the bike the same day. The assembly tech took the bike for a test ride and was both surprised and impressed with the overall bike’s quality and performance. When I picked up the bike, I was far from disappointed. In fact, I was extremely ecstatic. The bike looks awesome, and the first test ride has me smiling from ear to ear.
I did purchase the Monster Carbon fork with the 4130 All Road and would highly recommend this upgrade for both ride comfort and weight. I also decided to get the 700c wheelset due to my riding habits.
The good:
- Steel Frame – Compliant, comfortable, but very quick ride
- Welding – Tight, clean welds all around
- Drive Train (SRAM Rival XPLR AXS eTap) – Amazing, shifts like butter
- Brakes (SRAM) – Excellent, the modulation is really good on these brakes
- Wheelset – Better than expected, were true out of the box
- 700c Tires – Great for hard top and packed gravel. Would consider other tires for loose gravel or single tracks
- Customer Service – Simply amazing!!
The okay:
- Crankset – Would have rather had the 170mm crank arms on the small frame (came with 165mm)
- Chainring – A 40t or 38t chainring would be better for this bike. The 42t is okay and I will keep it as is for now
- Handle/Drop Bars – Too narrow, but serviceable
- Stem – A little long for my body type, but probably good for most riders (easy enough to change)
- Saddle – The saddle is okay, but not something I would want for long rides. It is heavy and the padding lacks firmness
- Pedals – The base pedals are just okay. Very heavy and lack grip.
The bad:
- Seat Post – Old style (single bolt) saddle mount. Easily strips if not tightened correctly.
Overall, the bike is awesome! As stated earlier, I upgraded to the carbon fork. I have also replaced the saddle, seat post, and pedals. With these upgrades, the 4130 weighs 24.4 lbs. This weight includes the entire bike, two SBC bottle cages, computer mount, and Shimano hybrid MTB pedals.
I have ridden the bike about 200 miles so far. The 4130 All Road is quickly becoming my favorite bike in the stable. Interestingly, it is also the cheapest. A compliant, sure footed, quick ride that puts a smile on my face every time I am on the bike.
I highly recommend the SBC 4130 All Road XPLR AXS!!

The derailleur and chain weren't on which I suppose is good because I've had bikes come from them with bent derailleur hangers (which state corrected immediately). And I upgraded the fork to the monster fork which came totally separately from the bike. I suppose I could be stoked that they sent both a steel and carbon fork but it was unwanted work. The second frustration was a wayyy longer ship time than previous orders. I don't think it even shipped out until almost 10 days after my order confirmation. The GOOD NEWS is that it's a super dope bike and pairing it with the Rival AXS is wonderful and the carbon fork is WAY lighter than the steel one.
