Looks and Feels Cheap

The bike came super fast and was very easy to assemble. The rear wheel was out of true and needed some serious tensioning. Bike rides ok overall. The brakes are extremely cheap and will be the first thing I would upgrade. For the price I feel they could have thrown in tekro equivalents. If I would have seen this first I probably wouldn't have purchased. Overall, the bike seems cheap...which it is given the price tag but I do like the looks.

Single-Speed Sokol

Bought this bike because I have become a recent convert to single-speed road/paved path riding. I ride for exercise - no commuting, etc. My rides are usually around 20 miles on flat to rolling terrain which is about all my 65-year knees can stand. In the month or so I’ve had the bike it has met all my expectations and needs. The ordering and shipping process was simple and straightforward, and I took advantage of paying for it in 4 installments. The bike arrived in a timely manner, and there were no missing parts. After assembly by my local bike shop, the only physical damage I could find was a very small scratch in the paint somewhere on the frame that doesn’t even show. I can live with it. I’m about 6’2”, and the 59 cm fits me just right. The gear ratio is fine for the terrain here in the suburbs outside Atlanta where I ride as there are not many very steep hills to overcome. So, considering the price-point of this bike, it has been money well spent. I wasn’t sure about the bullhorn bars, but I’m getting used to them fine - late in the ride my lower back appreciates the more upright riding position you can get. Overall quality seems to be fine, but I know there are better components out there - for a price. Will I change some things out? As they wear out, I’m sure I’ll look at better brake calipers/pads/handles, but I like the seat just fine and the pedals get the job done. I really like the root beer color scheme (which I understand is the fastest color SBC offers) especially in the bright sun. My only complaint is that the inside of my right shoe hits the frame (sporadically) near the rear axle. Don’t know if I’m not placing my food correctly or what, but it’s not a problem I’ve had with other bikes. So, I’m just dealing with that by shifting my foot a bit as needed. Maybe different pedals (wider) are the solution? We’ll see. Otherwise, not much else to say.

I can ride my bike with no handle bars!

...that dangerous don't ride your bike with no handle bars :)

Great bike for the price, lots of color way options and good customer service. For my first new bike after using a 50 year old road bike for years definitely a breath of fresh air.

Bought the 4130 single speed to replace my vintage road bike and man is it fun to be back on a single speed! Ridding around Brooklyn on this bad boy harkens back to my youth ridding my huffy around my childhood town. Frame is light and comfortable on these rough NYC streets, but keep in mind it is still a narrow tire so you feel the road but it is perfectly comfortable and to be expected. Frame absorbs the road "features" well.

Color-way is gorgeous, for a 28 yr old male I was hoping that the color would not be "too" flashy (I typically go for a black on black on black scheme) and it is not too flashy. It is closer to a cola/copper metallic, muted in the shade and lights up in the light. Beautiful classic road bike styling.

Will potentially replace the saddle next season but honestly have no qualms with it after riding it for multiple 1hour plus rides the past few weeks.

Breaks are fine for what they are but may upgrade next season to something a bit hardier.

Tires could be better but they get it done and I wont be replacing them until they are worn to the point of requiring it. Again this is a next season optional and really not needed until its needed.

Sizing was easy to determine with sizing guide provided in the blog/listing but you should still measure yourself...at minimum find your ideal stand over height to accommodate the top tube height. You will want to make sure to use the very easy to follow "Text Book between the legs method." Pure fix has a good guide: https://www.purecycles.com/blogs/bicycle-news/basic-bike-fit

I am 5' 6" but sized down to 46cm frame based on my actual stand over height. Support was great to help confirm that I had made the right decision.

Can't really argue with the price to style to build.

10/10 would recommend to a friend/family.

Pictures do no justice!!!

From ordering this bike off the site the color way just popped and looked so good together from the chrome low pros and the brown leather seat and brown bar wraps just blended so good together but from the moment I received the package and busted the box open and seen the paint job on this rig my jaw instantly dropped!!! This bike looks like a classic! This bike here looks like it can be made based from an amazing lowrider bike the way this paint shines in the light is just amazing, classy, and stylish all at the same time!!! The 4130 frame man this bad boy comes in just about 20 pounds I believe this baby gets up and goes!!! Had to match mine with the gum colored pedals to go with these amazing gum wall tires!!! State with another amazing bike!

A screw up with a happy ending

With the holiday season fast approaching, I decided I wanted to treat myself to a new mid-range fixed gear bike to start the new year right. After looking around at various options from different brands, I settled on State’s Sokol based on its classic aesthetic and positive reviews. Imagine my surprise when I opened the box and got a Van Damme instead.
After giving it some thought, I decided to keep the Van Damme, but since I’d ordered an upgraded saddle in brown I had to get it replaced.
Going through the bike parts, I also found that the seat post was missing the bottom clamp piece to hold the saddle.
In other words, State’s quality control at the packing facility isn’t all that great, to say the least.
That said, what is really great about State is how responsive they are to problems.
After emailing them, I got a reply within 24-hours. I was given a shipping label immediately, no hassle, no questions asked, to return my saddle and got a tracking number for both a new saddle and seat post immediately. They would have just as easily sent me a new bike, but I chose to keep the Van Damme as it looked amazing out of the box.
Here I have to say that dealing with State’s customer service has been extremely easy and efficient, which is something I really appreciate.
As for the bike, the Van Damme is an incredibly sweet machine. Not only does it look amazing, but it handles extremely smoothly. The stock State cranks felt great out of the box, and not one bit mushy or unresponsive. I typically ride a mix of flats and hills and the stock 46x16 gearing is perfect for this kind of city riding (plus a 46T chain ring let’s you accelerate slightly faster out of a complete stop than a 48x17, which is what I had been riding previously).
The wheels did have to be trued, but this is to be expected after the shifting and moving in the box during delivery. Honestly speaking, I was pretty happy with the bike’s stock components overall.
If you’re thinking about getting a State bike and worry about the quality control issues mentioned in this and other reviews, note that State will handle their mistakes in a timely and professional manner, and that in the end, you’ll have a really awesome bike on your hands.

Excellent bike, even better service.

I love this bike and get many compliments on it. I was happy to learn this is a local company (to me anyway). The bike overall is a fun ride and minimal which I like. The frame color is better than the pictures do it justice. To top it off, their customer service is beyond outstanding and they are very willing to help with just about anything they can. I even went to the ride shop after I purchased my bike for fun to check it out, and even that was a great experience with their staff. All around state bicycle is great, from their products to their people. Couldn’t recommend them more highly. They have a customer for life with me.

Drilled high-flange hubs, an open faceplate stem, and the CNC’d seat post clamp not only look great but also help to shave some additional weight.

The latest 4130 Steel Line models feature a subtle but stylish ‘STATE’ logo on the down tube and an updated ‘SBC’ head tube logo.
