Great bike for the price

The brakes are not amazing and my fork came bent making it hard to take the front wheel on and off. However, for the price the bike is great and I cannot wait to take it on many bikepacking adventures!

Blown Away

I’ve been away from biking for a couple of years now, I guess sometimes life just gets in the way. All the while, I had family and friends persuading me get back on the bike, so I causally started looking for some gravel options. After checking a couple reviews I decided to check out State, and have been blown away ever since. Their sales and service team answered all my questions, and I decided to pull the trigger. I received my order in a matter of days and after having their recommended bike shop complete the professional assembly, I was back in the saddle. First, I was totally stoked at the looks of this bike. The olive matte with black contrast is just cool A.F. (already received several compliments). And the feel of this bike is amazing. I’m used to MTB setups, but even with the 700cc wheel set this thing feels just as solid and stable as anything else I’ve ridden before, but much much whippier and responsive. I’ve only got a few rides under my belt, but thing has relit a fire that I’ve been missing.

I mentioned their sales and service team earlier, even after my initial purchase they’ve been top notch. I ordered the extra 650b wheel set, but noticed they inadvertently sent another set of 700cc. No problem, I contacted them and within the hour I had a return label and the correct set was already on its way. Hats off to you SBC, you have a huge fan here!

Initial Issues Quickly Resolved by Great Customer Support

Had some issues with the initial delivery, but Chris was quick to get everything resolved. Still finishing up the build, but gf is super happy. By far the best deal in gravel if you're looking for steel. Size XS 43cm, 650b.

Solid

Love this bike. Handles well on road and dirt. I put ergonomic grips and bull horn bar ends and a longer stem on it and now it rides and feels great.
I’m 6’ and bought the recommended size. East assembly. Will be great for mixed gravel rides and bikepacking.

Started bad ended great

With any new bike the first thing I start with is to remove all the bolts, and re-set them using a bit of grease and a true torque limiter wrench.
Also, I had a wider bar that I wanted to use instead of the stock bar.
But the right brake lever had been installed on the bar at the factory with waaay too much force, and was for all purposes welded in place. All the tricks to remove the bolt once the hex was stripped came to no use.
I emailed State with the problem, including photos. And did they come through fast! Thanks, State!
I had a replacement brake lever only a few days later and now I'm happily getting around on this bike.
What is it for? This is #4 in my fleet, which includes a bikepacking bike, a road race bike, and a gravel race bike. This State 4130 flat bar I've been riding more than any other - great for commuting, especially in fall wet weather and slimy leaves. For a short gravel ride (I'm only 1 mile from a venue with a lot of dirt trails) it is a hoot. And with racks, and flip-flop pedals, I can jump on it with any sort of clothing and make a dash down to the grocery store. Or the bakery. Or the coffee shop.
It isn't in the same high performance league as my other bikes, but for a giggle fest just getting out the door it is ideal.

Great bike!

Love my new bike, when looking for a bike and test riding I was told that it had to feel perfect if I wanted to be motivated to ride consistently. And since I got the bike I’ve been riding every weekend. I might upgrade the saddle but I’m told by other experienced riders that I’ll get used to it. Five stars!

Amazing for the price

I work in the bike industry at what I suppose you'd call the opposite end of the price spectrum. With that perspective in mind, it is incredible to me what State is able to accomplish for the price. I bought this bike specifically for commuting and with that use case in mind, this bike is definitely ticking all the right boxes. The 1x11 drivetrain is, so far, pretty remarkable. Smooth shifts and easy operation, though I admit I only have about 20 miles on the bike so far. While the brakes are far from high end, they seem to also be sufficient and trouble-free.

A few quick items of note on the "cons" side of things:
- At least in a size Large, the toe overlap is pretty significant with the front wheel. For commuting this is a non-issue, but it's worth noting if you'll be using this as a true off-road gravel rig. Overall, the geometry does feel a bit compact for me at 6'1" and I can't imagine being 6'5" on this thing.
- 2 of the 4 threaded bosses on the dropouts for fender/rack mounting (both on the non-drive side) seemed to have damaged threads. I was able to work around this by inserting a narrower bolt and a nut rather than using the threads
- The seat post is a bit insufficient for me, at least at 190 lbs ride-ready. Tightened fully it still slips on the teeth if I hit a big bump when seated. An easy and cheap upgrade.
- The bars are a bit narrow for my taste. Also an easy and cheap upgrade.

Again, I'm really impressed at what State was able to accomplish for the price. I think it's great that bikes like this exist for people who don't need or want to spend a fortune on a bike. This is a great entry point for a large part of the population and anything that gets more people riding is great. I don't know that I'd take this on missions 100 miles from civilization without making some upgrades, but I don't think you could find more bike for the money (and I tried).
