A fine way to practice real estate.

I bought this bike to launch my new business as a real estate agent who does home tours by bike here in Portland, Or and I wanted a bike other than my racer bikes and wanted something classy looking as I tour my clients around town and the Elliston was the perfect fit. I can load it up when needed or head out as is and it will always look good! As I grow "Your Home by Bike", I might get to the point of buying additional Elliston's for my out of town clients since they are super easy and comfortable to pedal around.

Solid bike, but have a spoke wrench handy.

My overall customer service experience was fabulous, my order was processed promptly, shipped quickly, and arrived well-packed and undamaged. The bike is generally solid, however be aware that the frame is not what's pictured on the website. It does not have a sloping top tube, but rather a traditional straight tube, and it does not have the mounted bottle opener (which is fine since that seemed silly anyway) - instead there are traditional water bottle mounts. You will definitely need to have experience truing wheels as the rear was severely out-of-round. The front was also out-of-true, but not as badly as the rear. The front also needed some bearing adjustment as they were very tight as shipped. You'll need some wheel maintenance experience, or invest in the cost of having your LBS thoroughly check them. Also, the supplied pedals are horrid with nearly frozen bearings (they are not serviceable). I upgraded to a pair of Shimano PD-M324 and they are a tremendous improvement. Finally, I found the supplied 100mm stem a bit short for the large size 58cm frame and swapped it out for a Cinelli 1A in 120mm length. This required a shim for the 26.4mm bar mount. This purely a personal fit preference and not a knock on the bike.

All-in-all a solid bike with a really nice matte finish that will require some expert assembly and perhaps an upgrade of a component or two.

It's Ok, but the shipping method and assembly required sure leaves a bad taste

I've only ridden the bike a few miles so far, but let me say that it seems fine, about what I expected, but...
The shipping/packaging is pretty absurd. There's zero padding, sytrofoam, nothing. The box was heavily damage, and because of the lack of padding etc, the chain guard was heavily dented and mangled, the fender and other miscellaneous parts were scratched or had minor dents. Some screws or nuts were just loosely rolling around, and given the gashes in the box, I can't comprehend how they weren't lost. The back rack came installed sort of, but still required additional assembly. The chain guard had to be removed and I requested a replacement that had a label created but not shipped yet (it's been 8 days). The front wheel had to be installed, as did the stem/handlebars, which is standard, but that meant the front rack and fender had to be installed, and the installation of those, especially the front rack, was very difficult. I have all the tools, and I've worked at a bike shop but that was so tedious and miniscule that they need to re-design it or something.

Also, I don't think the bearings are all properly greased, so that's frustrating, the front wheel is definitely out of true, and the warranty is only valid if you get it assembled at a bike shop. That means you have to pay at least $100 more than likely to get your bike actually up and running, and I don't think that's very cool at all.

It's a nice bike. Too bad it arrived without any brakes

Nothing to add other than annoyance at having to buy brakes that were supposed to come with the bike

Hi Ross, We apologize if there was any confusion regarding your purchase. Our City Bike models come standard with coaster brakes. You shouldn't need to purchase hand brakes. Please contact us at info@statebicycle.com if you have any additional questions about your purchase.

Nice bike

Love the design. All the critical components are very solid. Good wheels, shifters, internal hub, bottom bracket, handlebar assembly, etc. It's not a featherlight, but doesn't pretend to be. A really good solid city bike. Just two suggestions/caveats: 1) The seat looks pretty in the photo but is hard as ****. Really uncomfortable unless you have an iron rear... and if you do I don't want to hear about it. Plan to replace it ASAP. 2) It could maybe be more clearly noted on the web that the bike will require assembly by a bike shop after delivery. Maybe this was obvious to other customers, but I missed it and would have been out on the road a few days earlier if I had known to plan for it. These are minor. This is a really nice bike, well-equipped and -built for the price, and riding it is a blast.

i guess you get what you pay for

So $500 isn't much for a bike so maybe i should have had lower expectations but this thing is a toy and in no way shape or form functions as a dutch style commuter bike. porteau and rear rack are so flimsy as to be decorative and sharp edged with flashing still attached. You should probably discontinue the Large size. At 6'4" 200lbs I don't think I will even try riding this in in New York City.

The product is good, but the service was exemplary.

The Elliston Deluxe is a good replacement for my stolen '68 Raleigh Record. Stylish, simple and perfect for daily commuting. It did suffer some bumps and bruises during the shipping but Carter, my customer rep, took care of everything. If he is a reflection of the company, then State Bicycle Co. is one of integrity.

I love this bike!

I just wanted to share my thoughts on this bike. I purchased this bike about 4 years ago. I initially purchased the bike for my wife to ride around the neighborhood with my kids. Because it’s a single speed, she said it was too hard for her to ride uphills. Hence, I started to use it to run the errands to the stores and used it for casual rides. I’m currently a member of a cycling group in Orange County, CA. Last Saturday I decided to ride this bike on a 40+ mile with my cycling club and finished with the club. I definitely left a lot of people speechless. I also had people to start checking out this bike company and bikes. They couldn’t believe how affordable the bikes were since most of them ride high end carbon racing bikes. Keep up the good work and I will be buying more bikes from you guys in the future! Respectfully, John

The City Bike Line is a thoughtfully designed, modern take on a classic style. Commuter-minded features such as fenders and a chain guard not only keep you and your bike clean but also contribute to a classic, refined design that includes a riveted leatherette saddle and retro-inspired metal pedals. Providing comfort without sacrificing on style, mustache-style handlebars outfitted with lock-on leatherette grips keep you in an upright riding position as you coast through the city streets on cushy 35c tires, while a coaster brake provides worry-free stopping power.

The City Bike line provides you the ability to opt for the ultimate simplicity of a single-speed or to choose an internal 3-speed hub for more demanding routes.
