sram-eagle-70-transmission-flattop-chain
SRAM Eagle 70 Transmission Flattop Chain

The same T-Type Flattop design as SRAM's premium Transmission chains, with solid pins and e-MTB approval.

A chain is the cheapest part of your drivetrain and the one that decides how long the expensive parts last. This is the one built for Eagle Transmission — 126 links, PowerLock connector included, fully approved for e-bike power.

What Flattop actually does

Look at the top edge of the outer plates. Where a conventional chain rounds off there, this one runs flat.

That flat profile leaves more material in the plate exactly where the load concentrates, which is how SRAM gets the strength to survive shifting under full power without making the chain heavier. The bottom of the plate is shaped differently — contoured to slide onto the next cog cleanly rather than clatter onto it.

Combined with Eagle Transmission cassettes, whose tooth profiles are cut to hand the chain off at specific points in the rotation, that's what lets you shift standing, mid-climb, with everything you've got going through the pedals.

Solid pins, and why they matter

Many chains use hollow pins to save weight. This one doesn't.

Solid chrome-hardened pins are what earn this chain full e-MTB approval. A motor puts sustained torque through a drivetrain that legs simply can't match, and the pin is where a chain fails first. Solid pins cost a few grams and buy a much higher fatigue ceiling.

Even without a motor, the same logic applies to a strong rider on a steep climb. Chrome-hardened inner links and polished steel outers round out a chain built for durability rather than for a spec-sheet weight.

T-Type only

This chain works with SRAM Eagle Transmission drivetrains. It is not interchangeable with other 12-speed chains.

Works with: all SRAM T-Type Eagle Transmission components — XX SL, XX, X0, GX, Eagle 90, Eagle 70, and Eagle Powertrain

Does not work with: standard Eagle 12-speed drivetrains, SRAM Road Flattop, Shimano, or any other 12-speed chain standard

If your bike has a hangerless derailleur that bolts directly through the frame, you're on Transmission and this is your chain.

126 links — size it before you ride it

126 links covers the large majority of full-suspension 29ers running a 52-tooth cassette, but chain length is bike-specific, not universal. You'll almost certainly be removing links.

Follow SRAM's Transmission chain length procedure rather than the old wrap-it-around-and-add-two method. Transmission has its own sizing sequence, and getting it wrong affects shift quality and derailleur clutch behavior in ways that are annoying to diagnose later.

About the PowerLock

A PowerLock 12-speed T-Type connector is included, and one thing to know before you install it:

PowerLocks are single-use. Once it clicks home under load, it's not meant to come apart again. Removing and reusing one compromises the connection. If you pull your chain for cleaning or a repair, install a fresh PowerLock — they're inexpensive, and it's worth keeping a spare in your pack.

Install it with the chain routed correctly, then push the pedals hard against the brake to seat it. It should snap audibly.

Replace it before it costs you a cassette

Chains stretch as they wear, and a stretched chain no longer sits correctly on the cog teeth — it starts grinding new profiles into your cassette and chainring instead of meshing with the existing ones.

Catch it early and you replace a chain. Ignore it and you replace a chain, a cassette, and a chainring.

Check with a chain wear gauge every few hundred miles. On a Transmission drivetrain where the cassette costs several times what the chain does, this is the highest-return five minutes of maintenance available to you.

Fitment

Speeds: 12

Chain technology: T-Type only

Drivetrain: SRAM Eagle Transmission

E-bike: Fully approved

Connector: PowerLock 12s T-Type, included

Specifications

Model: CN-TTYP-70-A1

Speeds: 12

Length: 126 links

Outer link: Polished steel, grey

Inner link: Chrome hardened, black

Pin type: Solid

Connector: PowerLock 12s T-Type, black

Chain technology: T-Type

E-bike approved: Yes

Weight: 270g (SRAM engineering estimate at 114 links)

Installation

Use SRAM's Transmission-specific chain length procedure — it differs from standard chain sizing and it matters here.
