So I’m a car guy as well as a bike mechanic. I was already shopping for a single-speed when State came up with this paint job that pays tribute to the many legendary racing cars that wore these colors. Kudos to State for offering the frame-only option; I love the look, but wanted to build it with higher-spec components. At 6’4” (193cm), I was worried that even the 61cm size might be too small. But the longish top tube and leaving the steerer uncut give exactly the fit I need. This bike will serve as a commuter, gravel bike, coffee bike and might even see action on our local velodrome. All are possible because of the generous tire clearance – I’m running 37s, but I’m sure you could go up to 40mm if you wanted. If I end up riding on the track, I’d build a second wheelset for tubulars. As you see it, the bike comes in at about 21 pounds; lighter wheels and tires and pulling off the brakes would probably take it down to about 18. It’s a great-looking frame that offers all kinds of possibilities at a fair price.

I’ve put just around 50 miles on my State BL v3. So far it meets my expectations. Caught the Black Label Black Friday bug and went for it. Bought as frame/fork, which also came with a super easy to install headset. The bike arrived quickly and assembly was a breeze. Bikes graphics and finish are spot on. After initial set up, the first hundred to two hundred miles will be spent dialing in and trimming the fork tube. I’m planning on having two to three different setups for this bike. One for a tracklocross feel, one for an urban cruiser and one for a speedster. A simple chainring, wheelset & bar swap should take care of all 3. With the ability to put 33+ tires on it, the bike is pleanty comfortable over the rough stuff and allows for a long day of riding. I highly recommend pulling the trigger on this very affordable bike. It allows a versatility that I haven’t been able to find elsewhere.

Great looking frame . Only issue was the head tube required reaming. Other than that, bottom bracket and seat post fit adequately. Will update when build is finished ....

My first State and first aluminum bike

I've been riding fixed gear bikes for decades now and after a long time without a new build, it was time. This 6061 v3 from State checked several boxes for me (price, company reputation, geometry, looks) and I finally had it built at my local shop. I've only had 20 miles on it today but it feels fantastic. Power transfer is great. I'm a larger guy, 6'2 and 250 lbs (but getting lighter!) so frame flex on steel bikes has always been a thing for me. That's nonexistent here and I went with 35c tires to lessen any harshness in the ride. I did about 15 miles on the street / paved paths and another 5 miles on gravel and easy single track and it felt very nimble - the geometry of this bike is perfect for me and works well with my stem and bars. A note on sizing - a State person advised me that if I was in between a size, or close to fitting two sizes, go smaller. Luckily I decided against that and went with the 61cm frame and its great. To be honest I could use a *slightly* longer top tube so I might swap out this 110mm stem with a 120mm. I need a lot more miles on the bike before I decide but so far it's been a solid fit. If you are on the larger side definitely consider the 61cm frame instead of the 58cm. The 58cm would've been a bad choice for me but it's going to depend on inseam and to a lesser degree, your reach. Another note on State's customer service - they are absolutely amazing. UPS damaged the first frame that was sent - the damage was cosmetic (a few paint chips on the head tube) but it was very noticeable. State gave me the option of a generous store credit or partial refund or ship me a new frame. I chose a new frame which they sent *immediately*. That 2nd frame ended up beating my other parts to my doorstep. I was honestly expecting some pushback on the frame but it was handled smoothly. Also, in the rush of getting the damaged frame sent back I either lost or shipped back the FSA headset that came with the bike. I asked them to charge me for a new one - but instead they mailed me the replacement for no charge. I doubt this level of kindness and consideration is unique to my purchase. State is an awesome company and I'm happy I chose them for my frame (and cog and bars and a few other bits!). Looking forward to many more miles on this beast.
