This is a great riding frame. I buy myself a hardtail frame every year and move as many components over as I can, then buy the rest. Mine looks darker than the picture I saw when I ordered it, but great finish. I went from riding an aluminum hardtail with similar geometry to this one and it almost feels like I have a short travel rear shock. Very nice feel. I did have an issue with my Maxxis Minion 2.5s rubbing the left side of the yoke (I think that's what they call it where the stays connect to the seat tube). The tire only rubbed when I pedaled hard or put extra weight on the rear. I was able to dish my wheel over a little toward the drive side and now it's okay but I did eat through the paint to bare metal, so my next tires will be 2.4s max. Frame does not include a chain stay protector. Like a noob, I realized this when my chain was clanking around and took a bite out of my paint. I immediately bought an Amazon special peel n stick and fixed it. I think State Bicycle should make their own because I am sure it would look better with their bikes. Everything went together well. Bottom bracket threads were clean and confirmed 73mm and standard threads. The 44/44 (straight tube) headset gave me a little trouble, but I finally got it to seat nice and straight; the crown race included is a cheap one with a slit in it; I used the cane creek one I had on my fork already and it worked with the headset. I replaced the included QR seat post clamp with a NQR one but the one included was fine. Great ride. Climbs as well as it descends, maybe even better. Very easy pedal compared to my previous 29er with most of the same components. The cable guides under the top tube are the screw-in clamp-style kind are a bit fussy, and my brake hose seemed too large for them to clamp it nicely, but they work. The threaded holes for the chainring guard and the brake post mounts had a bit of paint that needed to be cleaned out, but I got done in a couple of minutes. This is my 3rd State Bicycle and my favorite as far as style and ride. Great quality. Very pleased.

(This thing is dope AF! I am 6'2" and I run a 175mm dropper. I ordered the M/L and it is perfect. The insertion for the dropper is maxed out and somehow it fits me perfectly!!!) If you have doubts, cast them out.

I picked up a frame only in large (6’0 tall) to replace an old niner air 9. That thing was 12 years old with geometry to match. I dabble in mtb/xc races, so i like fast, light, stiff bikes for the most part. Something about the niner with the steel head tube angle, 100mm fork, rigid post and aluminum really just combo beat the crap out of me, along with having a tendency to put me over the bars. Admittedly, I’m not the best mountain bike handler (keep me on the cross course!)

Anyway, i knew i needed a change. I looked at a few options. Knew i wanted to be at least somewhat singlespeed capable. I initially, that eliminated this one. Looked at some other bikes. Nothing really what i wanted for the price i wanted to pay.

Picked one of these up. Used an origin 8 revolver eccentric bottom bracket for bsa threads. That was enough to get me rolling. Raced it once. Ridden it a few times. It’s immensely more stable and feels far less scary than the niner. Took it down powerline out in Leadville yesterday and I’m still alive to write this review.

It isn’t as stiff or as fast uphill as the niner was, and is a bit heavier, but so far being less scared, and also staying ON the bike (instead of getting dumped off it) ends up being faster in the long run. I love it. Will keep at it.

I work at a shop that deals in State bikes, so I decided to order the 4130 mountain when it first came out. First impressions were solid. The Psylo fork and awesome geometry of the frame are top notch. The 4130 steel absorbs all of the abuse you can throw at it and feels much less rough on drops or tech trails when compared to an alum frame. I LOVE the gold patina, as it's more subdued in person than in the pictures. The wheels, wrapped with WTB Trail Boss tires are killer, tubeless setup was an absolute breeze and I'm happy to report no issues.

The bike gets 4/5 stars for a couple of reasons. First, the factory derailleur is a place holder for something better. Even with the clutch active I dropped the chain several times. The initial solution was an MRP chain guide. Second, the factory cassette. While the gearing range is perfect for where I ride, there are lots of techy climbs. The cassette did not survive, and cog #3 folded over in cog #4 during a climb. Finally, the derailleur took a bash that killed it. Swapped over to base level Deore 5100 for the cassette, shifter, and derailleur and all is great now.

My final gripe is that the crank set has to go if I want to add an aftermarket chainring. I have had the hankering for an AbsoluteBlack oval chainring, however the factory crankset is it's own pattern and will not fit any of their options. Luckily Deore is cheap and I'll be swapping that next!

This bike is a great time, and I'm super pleased with the build quality and geometry. I've been looking for a playful modern hardtail for a while. I have a full suspension trailbike and I miss the playful nature of a hardtail. I swapped all of my parts from that bike onto the 4130 Trail. The frame finish is good, and I had no surprises while building it up. The day after the build, I rode a bike park with some big berms, some gap jumps, pump track, etc. The bike was super fun and super predictable. It feels good, and there weren't any situations where it felt weird. I didn't really need to think about it at all, and that's a beautiful thing. I'm a big fan of what STATE does as a company, and I'm absolutely stoked to be riding this new entry into the MTB space. Oh...and it's a pretty bike. I've gotten loads of compliments on it. Keep it up, STATE.

Set this bike up as a trail bike with 27.5 tires and Fox 36, great quality frame with nice geometry. For the price point it is great. Would have given 5 stars but the internal cable routing for the dropper post is difficult, could be designed better. The metal guides for the internal routing fell into the frame and had to re-route the cable. Be careful when moving the housing too, it can get caught on the metal guides and split the housing.

So I don’t know what universe this color can be considered gold… Everybody who sees it says it’s military green. That aside this is one of the best riding bikes I’ve ever owned. I’ve got over three decades of MTB experience and I’ve written a lot of things, but this is the best feel by far. Smooth, steel ride, quality, excellent geometry, the fork was a complete surprise, and the shift and turned out to be rock solid it’s light. It’s nimble. And climbs like a mountain goat on steroids. I am 6 foot five 250 pounds so a sturdy ride with this epic handling at this price point is not easy to find. I highly recommend this bike… Maybe in the purple though ;-)

I am new to trail/mountain biking as I’ve been a long time road cyclist. This bike has been perfect for me as I am developing skills and enjoyment with this hard tail mountain bike. It very much meet my needs and it gives me something to really grow into in terms of a bike.

I've been wanting one of these for some time now. I am so stoked - I'd pictured it as an occasional bike for trail camping, fire roading, etc. Instead, I'm riding it several times per week. I've been riding DS enduro 29r bikes for years now, but never had a 29r hard tail MTB. This bike is so cool - proper trail-capable geo and a very sturdy stance. This pup doesn't flex like an XC minded frame. I got the Eagle Transmission upgrade only. Then upgraded to 4-pot brakes, dropper and SQ Lab carbon bar. Such a killer bike-- I've been riding it a ton. I'm 6'1", 185 lb and got the XL. Perfect ride fit and acceptable standover clearance. The bike actually came with 165mm cranks. But State graciously sent me a replacement in 175mm at no charge. Excellent customer service.
