SRAM Rival XPLR 1x Crankset — 42T, DUB Wide
Rival AXS puts premium performance within reach.
current price, £116.00
One ring, 42 teeth, and nothing up front to go wrong.
The Rival XPLR crankset is SRAM's aluminum 1x gravel platform: X-SYNC direct-mount chainring, DUB Wide spindle for tire clearance, and no front derailleur to trim, drop a chain, or knock out of alignment on a rock garden.
42T ring, available in 165mm and 170mm arm lengths.
Why 42T is the gravel number
Paired with a modern XPLR cassette running a 10-tooth small cog, a 42T ring covers the range gravel actually asks for.
- At the top: 42 x 10 gives you roughly the same gear as a 50T ring over a 12T cog. You'll spin out on a long paved descent, but you'll hold a fast group on flat and rolling road sections without a problem.
- At the bottom: against a 44T large cog you're near a 1:1 ratio, which handles most loaded gravel climbing. Against a 46T you go below 1:1.
Going bigger or smaller: if you ride mostly pavement to reach your gravel, or race flat courses, a larger ring makes sense. If you're loading bikepacking bags or riding sustained steep dirt, 40T or smaller is worth considering. For general mixed-terrain gravel, 42 is the middle of the road, which is why it's the most common spec on the category.
What X-SYNC actually does
Running 1x without a front derailleur means nothing holds the chain onto the ring except the ring itself. X-SYNC is how that works.
The teeth alternate wide and narrow to match the alternating inner and outer plates of the chain, so each link seats into a tooth shaped for it. The teeth are tall and square-edged rather than triangular, which means they engage the chain earlier and hold it through deflection. Rounded chamfers manage a chain thrown off-line by a hard hit, and recesses between the teeth clear mud and grit before it packs in.
That last part matters more on gravel than anywhere else. A ring that packs with mud starts skipping. This one is designed to shed it.
Laser-etched graphics rather than printed, so the finish survives chain slap, rock strikes, and pressure washing.
DUB Wide, and why it matters here
This crankset uses SRAM's DUB Wide spindle — a 47.5mm chainline and a 150mm Q-factor, versus 45mm and 145mm on a standard road crank.
The extra 2.5mm per side buys tire clearance. It moves the chainring and your feet outboard enough to clear the wider chainstays that gravel frames need to fit big rubber. The longer spindle also opens up compatibility with 73mm and BB92 bottom bracket shells, which some gravel frames use.
Check your frame's specified chainline before ordering. If your frame calls for 47.5mm, this is what you want. If it calls for 45mm, this crank will push your chainline out and widen your stance by 5mm. Frame manufacturers publish this in the geometry or spec sheet — ask us if you can't find yours.
Wide spindles work with rear ends up to 142mm.
Why 1x for gravel
- Nothing to shift wrong. No front derailleur means no trim, no cross-chain penalty to think about, and no dropped chain in the middle of a technical climb.
- One fewer thing to break. A front derailleur is a low-mounted, exposed component on a bike that spends its life getting sprayed with grit. Deleting it removes a failure point and a battery to charge.
- Simpler under load. Front shifts are the ones that go wrong when you're pedaling hard. There aren't any here.
- Cleaner frame. More tire clearance, more mud clearance, less to clean.
The honest trade: 1x has bigger jumps between gears than a 2x with the same total range. On sustained road sections at a steady effort, you'll occasionally want a gear that isn't there. On mixed terrain where you're constantly changing effort anyway, you won't notice.
Crank length — 165 or 170
Shorter cranks have taken over gravel fitting, and pedal clearance is a real reason on top of the fit reasons. A shorter arm opens your hip angle at the top of the stroke, which makes a longer day more comfortable, and it keeps your pedal further off the ground when you're pedaling through ruts and rock.
Power loss from going shorter is negligible for almost everyone — riders adjust cadence to compensate within a few rides.
- 165mm — riders under roughly 5'8", anyone with hip impingement or tight hip flexors, and anyone riding chunky terrain where pedal strikes are a regular event
- 170mm — the general-purpose length for most riders 5'8" and up, and the safe pick if you're on 172.5 and unsure
Going shorter raises your effective saddle height. From 172.5 to 170, raise the saddle 2.5mm. From 175 to 165, raise it 10mm. Get that wrong and the cranks will feel worse for reasons that have nothing to do with the cranks.
Bottom brackets
DUB uses one spindle diameter across every frame standard — you match the bottom bracket to your frame shell, not to the crank.
Wide needs Wide spacing. The bottom bracket itself is the same, but a Wide setup requires spacers 2.5mm thicker on each side. If you're ordering a bottom bracket alongside this, tell us and we'll send the right spacer configuration.
You will need a SRAM Flattop chain
SRAM's 12-speed road and gravel drivetrains use Flattop chains, a different design from standard 12-speed chains. A Shimano 12-speed chain will not work. A SRAM Eagle chain will not work. A generic 12-speed chain will not work.
Compatible: SRAM Road Flattop D1, Road Flattop E1, or T-Type.
What you'll still need
- DUB bottom bracket matched to your frame shell, with Wide spacer configuration
- SRAM Flattop chain — Road Flattop D1, E1, or T-Type
- XPLR or 1x cassette — a 10T small cog is what makes 42T work up top
- AXS rear derailleur. No front derailleur required.

Installation
Straightforward with the right tools: a DUB bottom bracket tool, a torque wrench, and correct preload adjustment. The spindle preload collar is not optional — set it properly or you'll have drag or play, and both eat bearings.
