A clipless XC pedal with a real platform under it.
current price, £123.00
A clipless XC pedal with a real platform under it.
Most SPD-compatible XC pedals give you a binding and almost nothing else — a tiny cage, a lot of air, and a shoe that pivots on the cleat whenever the trail gets rough. The ALT Performance XC gives you 534mm² of contact area in a body that's only 15mm thick, so you get the support of a platform pedal and the engagement of a clipless one at the same time.
Designed in Minnesota. Forged and post-machined aluminum, chromoly axle, three cartridge bearings and a bushing, and a full set of replacement parts available for every piece of it.
Why platform area matters on a clipless pedal
Your cleat is a single point. Everything around it is the pedal's job.
On a minimal XC pedal, the shoe's sole is cantilevered off that one point — so hard efforts, off-camber landings, and rocky descents all load the cleat interface instead of the shoe. You feel it as hot spots under the ball of the foot and as a vague, rolling sensation when you're out of the saddle.
A wider platform spreads that load across the sole. More of the shoe is supported, pressure drops, and the foot stops moving independently of the pedal. On long days it's a comfort story. On technical terrain it's a control story.
15mm thick, and that's the whole trick
Adding platform usually means adding thickness, and thickness means pedal strikes.
The ALT keeps the body to 15mm by forging it and then post-machining it — the forging gets the strength into the material, the machining takes out everything that isn't carrying load. The result sits your foot closer to the axle, which lowers your center of gravity slightly and keeps the pedal out of the rocks on the places where a thick pedal would catch.
Lower stack and more area is the combination that's hard to do. That's the pedal.
Open center, so mud leaves
The body is open around the binding rather than solid.
Mud, snow, pine needles, and grit pass straight through instead of packing into the cleat pocket. That's the difference between clipping in on the second try and stamping at the pedal for fifteen seconds at the bottom of a wet climb. It also means less weight in exactly the place where weight doesn't buy you anything.
SPD-compatible, with SPD-normal release
If you already ride two-bolt mountain shoes, these work with them. Cleats, shims, and bolts are in the box.
- 5° of float — enough rotational freedom that your knee tracks where it wants to, not where the cleat says
- 12° release angle — standard SPD-range release; predictable, and it doesn't take a deliberate twist to get out
- Hard chrome plated chromoly binding cage — the wear surface that decides how a clipless pedal feels in year three, not week one
- Adjustable tension on the rear binding, so you can set engagement where you want it
Fixed 55mm Q-factor
Q-factor is how far apart your feet sit. The ALT runs a fixed 55mm — a narrow-to-neutral stance that keeps your legs tracking in line with the cranks rather than splayed outward.
Narrower stance tends to feel more efficient for riders coming from road or XC, and it keeps the pedal body tucked in closer to the crank arm where it's less exposed to rock strikes. There's no spacer or adjustment to set — it is what it is, and it's the right number for most people.
Built to be serviced, not replaced
Three cartridge bearings and one igus bushing with a custom radial seal, on a satin nickel-plated chromoly axle.
Cartridge bearings spin smoothly and are easy to replace; the igus bushing takes the inboard load, where a bearing would be the first thing to die. The custom radial seal keeps water and grit out of all of it.
Wolf Tooth publishes a service guide and a user manual for this pedal and sells replacement parts for it — axles, bearings, seals, hardware. When something wears out, you replace the part that wore out. That's a different relationship with a pedal than buying a sealed unit and throwing it away in two seasons, and it's the main reason this pedal is on our site.
Maintenance
- Every 50 hours of riding: a drop of light oil on the rear binding mechanism. That's the whole routine.
- At install: grease the pedal threads before threading them into the crank arm. Skipping this is how pedals seize into crank arms.
- Service parts and documentation are available directly from Wolf Tooth.
Fitment
- Thread: 9/16" x 20 tpi — the standard for any adult crankset with a three-piece or modern spindle
- Shoes: Any two-bolt mountain bike shoe (SPD pattern)
- Cleats: Included, with shims and bolts
- Crank clearance: 55mm Q-factor, fixed — no adjustment
If you're coming off a wider-stance pedal and run orthotics or have a wide natural stance, note that Q-factor is not adjustable on this pedal.
