Rival AXS puts premium performance within reach.

Both derailleurs. One box. No cables anywhere.

Both derailleurs for a 2x AXS build, in one box.

Rival AXS rear derailleur and Rival AXS front derailleur — the two components that turn a set of AXS levers into a working wireless drivetrain. No cables, no housing, no indexing to drift out over a season.

Batteries and charger are not included. You'll need two AXS batteries, one for each derailleur.

How eTap shifting works

If you've never ridden AXS, the logic takes about thirty seconds to learn and then disappears:

  • Right paddle — harder gear
  • Left paddle — easier gear
  • Both at once — shifts the front derailleur

No tension to set, no barrel adjuster to chase, no cable stretching over the first hundred miles. The derailleurs listen for the levers and move to positions they already know. Every shift is the same shift, whether it's the first ride or the two-hundredth.

The rear derailleur

Handles cassettes from 10-28T to 10-36T, on 1x or 2x, with chain damping that keeps things quiet over broken pavement and secure on rough surfaces.

A wide-range drivetrain puts real slack into the system at the small-cog end, and slack becomes chain slap and dropped chains. The cage is damped against that motion — enough to hold the chain settled, not so much that shifts get slow or the chain fights you climbing the cassette.

Range limit: 36T maximum, 28T minimum. Anything larger needs an XPLR derailleur. A 13-speed cassette needs a 13-speed XPLR derailleur.

The front derailleur

Front shifting is where most drivetrains still feel mechanical, and it's the shift people learn to avoid under load. This one is built to fix that.

Yaw cage rotation. Instead of moving straight sideways, the cage rotates as it moves, keeping a consistent angle to the chain across the whole cassette. That's what eliminates trim — the cage is already at the right angle whether you're in the 10 or the 36.

Auto trim. On top of the Yaw geometry, the derailleur makes its own micro-adjustments as you move across the rear cassette. No rasp, no rubbing, nothing for you to manage.

A narrower cage shaped specifically around X-Range chainring profiles, which shortens the distance the chain has to travel and makes the shift itself faster and cleaner.

A setup tool is included, which takes the guesswork out of getting cage height and rotation right — historically the fiddliest part of any front derailleur install.

Fitment — read before ordering

The rear derailleur is flexible. The front derailleur has three hard constraints.

1. Braze-on mount. This is the braze-on version. Your frame needs a braze-on tab on the seat tube. If your frame doesn't have one, you'll need a separate clamp adapter in 31.8mm or 34.9mm, sold separately.

2. 45mm chainline, 2x only. It's built for a standard road chainline and 46/33T, 48/35T, or 50/37T chainring combinations. It will not work with a Wide 47.5mm chainline crankset — that needs a Wide-specific front derailleur — and it obviously won't work on a 1x build.

3. Chainstay angle between 61 and 66 degrees. Most road frames fall inside this. Some gravel and long-chainstay frames don't. Your frame manufacturer publishes it.

AXS app

Pair both derailleurs to the SRAM AXS app and you can check battery levels on each, reassign what every control does, get service reminders, and push firmware updates.

Sequential shifting is the feature worth setting up on a 2x build. Turn it on and the system manages the front derailleur for you — you keep pressing the same paddle, and it decides when to move the chain across the front and compensate at the rear to keep the gear progression smooth. It makes a 2x drivetrain feel like a 1x with more gears in it.

Batteries

You need two AXS batteries and a charger. Neither is included.

They're interchangeable front to rear, which is genuinely useful: if the rear derailleur dies mid-ride, pull the front battery and swap it back. You lose front shifting and finish the ride with a working rear.

The shift levers are a separate system — they run CR2032 coin cells that last years, not rides.

Carrying a spare battery in a jersey pocket is cheap insurance. It swaps in about five seconds with no tools.

Mixing tiers

Every AXS component speaks the same wireless protocol, so you can mix freely. These derailleurs work behind RED or Force levers. A RED cassette runs fine on a Rival drivetrain.

Rival is where most people should spend the least in an AXS build — the shifting is functionally identical to the tiers above, and the difference is materials and grams. Put the savings into wheels.

You will need a SRAM Flattop chain

SRAM's 12-speed road drivetrains use Flattop chains, a different design from standard 12-speed chains. A Shimano 12-speed chain will not work. A SRAM Eagle chain will not work. A generic 12-speed chain will not work.

Compatible: SRAM Road Flattop D1 or Road Flattop E1.

Installation

Bolt the rear derailleur to the hanger, set limit screws and B-gap per SRAM's procedure, install batteries, and press the AXS button on each component to pair. Pairing takes about a minute and doesn't need the app, though the app is worth setting up anyway.

For the front derailleur, use the included setup tool. Cage height and rotation are the two things people get wrong, and the tool removes the guesswork from both.

Check your hanger alignment first. The rear derailleur hangs off a replaceable hanger like any conventional derailleur, and a bent hanger makes a perfectly good electronic drivetrain shift badly. A hanger alignment gauge is the cheapest fix for a problem people usually blame on the derailleur.
