State’s first roll-top backpack, the SED Hydration Day Pack, is made in collaboration with Road Runner Bags and built in the U.S.A.. The Cordura pack just came to market for $120. It carries up to 16 liters of gear and a three-liter bladder for hydration as you bike.

I fell in love with State’s bikes when I saw them at my first Red Hook Crit. The team was racing the Undefeated in silver, which looked quite classy under the lights. Fast forward to a few months back, and I was throwing my leg over my own State, the Contender II.

State Bicycle Co. aims to produce quality bikes ‘at an honest and fair price’, and with a quick look at these stealthy steeds, their $450 price tag seems pretty fair! The company has just released two new models called The Ashton and The Trooper 4.0.
But the duo had never intended to set up a brick-and-mortar store. Until now, State Bicycle’s stock was sold online and through a network of 350 retailers. If they were going to open their own store, Ferguson reasoned, the place would have to be noticeably different from other bike shops.

Why / How did you start your business in the bicycle industry?We started in 2009 and at that time, it was so difficult to find a nice single-speed/fixed-gear that was affordable AND high-quality. #BagsOnBikes are so hot right now. State Bicycle Co. and Road Runner teamed up to make a frame bag that fits the State Bicycle Co. Megalith as well as most MTB frames and possibly some CX bikes with toight geometry. Looks like it stays well out of the way and seems reasonably stealth.
