4130 All-Road - Frameset (UDH | External Routing) - Mint Chocolate Chip

Our versatile steel workhorse

The 4130 All-Road frameset in its simplest form.

Double-butted 4130 chromoly frame and matching chromoly fork, UDH dropouts, thru-axles front and rear, and completely external cable routing — so the first build is faster and every service after it is simpler.

Clearance for 650b x 2.4" or 700c x 2.25" means one frame covers two very different bikes. Long 450mm chainstays, a slack front end, and a low bottom bracket keep it calm on loose ground. Headset, thru-axles, UDH hanger, and cable guides included.

Get ready to conquer the road less traveled — with nothing hidden inside the frame.

The 4130 All-Road frameset in its simplest form. Double-butted 4130 chromoly frame and matching chromoly fork, UDH dropouts, thru-axles front and rear, and completely external cable routing.

Double-butted means the tube walls are thicker at the ends, where they're welded and where stress concentrates, and thinner through the middle, where they don't need to be. You get the strength where it matters and shed weight everywhere else — which is what separates a good steel frame from a heavy one.

Whether you're hitting gravel, loading up for a bikepacking trip, or building a commuter you'll actually enjoy riding, this is the frame that gets out of your way.

Why external routing

Internal routing looks clean. It also means fishing housing through a frame, dealing with internal guides that rattle, and occasionally pulling a bottom bracket out to chase a cable that won't feed.

Everything on this frame runs outside, where you can see it, adjust it, and replace it. Cable stops and guides are right there. Swapping a shift cable is a twenty-minute job with a set of cutters, not an afternoon with a magnet and a bent spoke.

On a frameset that matters more than it does on a complete bike, because you're the one doing the build. The first assembly is faster, and every service after that is simpler.

It also keeps the frame cheaper to make, which is the honest reason it exists — this is the affordable way into the All-Road platform.

UDH

Universal Derailleur Hanger dropouts. A replacement is available at virtually any shop, anywhere in the world — no proprietary part to source after a crash on a trip.

It also opens the door to modern direct-mount drivetrains if you ever want to go that direction, without needing a different frame to do it.

Room for real rubber

Clearance for mountain bike tires on a steel gravel frame:

  • 650b / 27.5": up to 2.4" (60mm)
  • 700c / 29": up to 2.25" (57mm)

That's the range that makes this frame worth building twice. A 650b wheelset with 2.1" or 2.4" knobbies turns it into something genuinely capable off-road. A 700c wheelset with something fast turns it into a quick commuter. Same frame, two bikes, one purchase.

Actual fitment varies with rim width and tire brand — a 2.25" on a wide rim measures wider than the same tire on a narrow one.

The geometry

Long chainstays, a slack front end, and a low bottom bracket. Every number here is doing the same job.

  • 450mm rear center across every size — a long rear end tracks straight on loose surfaces and stays planted when the bike is loaded
  • 70.5° to 71.5° head angle — slack by gravel standards, so the front wheel leads rather than darts and washboard doesn't push the bars around
  • 75mm BB drop — low, which puts your weight below the axles and is what makes a bike feel confident in corners and on off-camber dirt
  • 50mm fork offset across every size — paired with a head angle that steepens slightly as the frame grows, so the smaller sizes carry a little more trail to stay calm and the larger ones a little less to stay lively

The result is a bike that's calm. It won't feel twitchy on a fire road descent and it won't fight you when the surface changes mid-corner.

Built on standards you can actually build on

Frame & Cockpit
  • 1-1/8" threadless steerer
  • 27.2mm seatpost
  • 68mm BSA threaded BB
  • Completely external routing
Drivetrain
  • UDH dropouts
  • 1x or 2x compatible
  • Square taper or external BB, your choice
  • Threaded BB — nothing to press
Wheels & Brakes
  • 12x100mm front thru-axle
  • 12x142mm rear thru-axle
  • Flat mount disc brakes
  • 650b or 700c

No press-fit bottom bracket to creak. No proprietary seatpost. No internal routing to fight. Nothing on this frame will be hard to find a part for in ten years.

Sizing

  • XS (43cm) — riders 5'1" – 5'6"
  • S (47cm) — riders 5'6" – 6'1"
  • M (51cm) — riders 5'9" – 6'2"
  • L (55cm) — riders 6'1" – 6'6"

Sizes overlap on purpose. If you fall between two, the smaller size gives a more nimble, upright fit and the larger one stretches you out. Full numbers — reach, stack, standover, and wheelbase for every size — are on our geometry chart.

What's included

  • Frame
  • Fork
  • 1-1/8" threadless headset
  • Thru-axles, front and rear (M12, 100mm front / 142mm rear)
  • Universal Derailleur Hanger
  • Cable guides

Everything else is yours to choose. The headset, axles, and hanger being included matters more than it sounds — they're the small parts that are easy to forget when you're ordering a build, and the ones that stop the project dead when they don't show up.

FAQ

Rider-owned in Phoenix, AZ since 2009. 5-year frame warranty on steel, aluminum & titanium · most in-stock bikes ship in 1 business day · 4.8/5 from 16,000+ reviews.

How does my bike show up, and do I need a shop?

That depends on how you order it:

  • With Pro-Build (select models: $79.99, or $129.99 on Carbon Road). Our mechanics in Phoenix face the frame, set up and bleed the hydraulic brakes, index the drivetrain, cut the steerer to our stock length and torque-check everything before it goes in the box. That's the shop work that usually runs $150–$300 locally. You bolt on the bars, seatpost, front wheel and pedals, set your hoods and wrap your tape: about 20–30 minutes with a hex set and a torque wrench. Pro-Build adds a 1–2 week build queue.
  • Without Pro-Build. Your bike ships mostly assembled, but it needs a full assembly and tune by a professional mechanic before it's ride-ready. Carbon, titanium and AXS builds that skip Pro-Build arrive unassembled with an uncut steerer, so your shop can build them to your exact fit.

Either way, a professional build is safer, rides better, and unlocks our better warranty tier (see below).

How Pro-Build works · Find a shop near you

What does the warranty cover?

Every State bike comes with our Standard Limited Warranty against manufacturing defects for the original owner. No registration required.

  • Steel, aluminum & titanium frames and forks: 5 years
  • Carbon frames and forks: 1 year (2 years with ProBuild Advantage)
  • Non-consumable parts (cranks, wheels, hubs, bars, stem, seatpost, pedals): 1 year

Not covered: wear items (tires, tubes, chains, brake pads, grips, bar tape, saddles, spokes, paint), rust on RAW finishes, crash damage, and labor or shipping costs. Full warranty details

What is ProBuild Advantage, and how do I get it?

It's our "you did it right" warranty tier for bikes that were professionally assembled and registered within 30 days of delivery. You get everything in the Standard warranty, plus:

  • 2 years on carbon frames and forks, instead of 1
  • Priority claim review: ProBuild claims go to the front of the line
  • Faster help with shifting or braking issues, without the "did you tighten that bolt?" back-and-forth
  • Shipping perks on approved warranty replacement parts
  • Discounted pricing on a replacement frame or bike for up to 5 years from delivery, if a crash wins

To activate it: add Pro-Build when you order, or have a local shop assemble your bike and keep the receipt. Then register your bike within 30 days of delivery with your serial number (engraved under the bottom bracket shell) and proof of assembly. If you ordered Pro-Build, our mechanics already did the build. You just register.

When will my bike ship?

Most in-stock bikes ship within 1 business day, and you'll get tracking as soon as yours is on its way. Adding Pro-Build puts your bike in our build queue for 1–2 weeks before it ships. Shipping is calculated at checkout from your location and the size of your order, and bikes go out by UPS or FedEx Ground.

Outside the U.S.? We ship worldwide, and duties and taxes are paid at checkout, so nothing is due on delivery. Shipping policy

What if it's not right? Returns & exchanges

You have 30 days from delivery to request a return or exchange. Bikes need to be unused, in like-new condition and in their original packaging.

  • Refunds: a return label fee is deducted ($45 for complete bikes), and original shipping isn't refundable.
  • Exchanges: issued as store credit. The return label fee applies here too.
  • Package Protection Plan (add it at checkout): covers loss and damage in transit, removes return label fees and deductions, and extends the window for exchanges and store credit to 60 days. Refunds stay at 30 days.

Pro-Build and other service work can't be refunded once it's done. Final sale, clearance and limited-run items can't be returned, and neither can international orders.

Start a return · Full return policy

Can I pay over time, or use HSA/FSA funds?

Yes. Financing with Bread Pay splits your bike into monthly payments, and you can pay it off early with no penalty (subject to credit approval). You may also be able to use pre-tax HSA/FSA dollars through Truemed. A short intake at checkout checks your eligibility, which depends on your plan. HSA/FSA guide

Which size do I need?

Geometry charts, size guides and full build specs for every model are on our Size Charts & Specs page. Between sizes, or running a tall stack or long stem? Get in touch before you order. Pro-Build cuts the steerer to our stock length, and that can't be undone.

Can I see one in person or get it built locally?

Use our dealer & shop locator to find a shop near you for a look in person, assembly or a tune-up.

The ride & price makes up for almost everything.

Ultimately I'm very happy with the frame & purchase; everything below I feel is objective, honest & fair.

The Frame, Geometry & Updates

• Beautiful Welds & Finish - frame joints is excellent. Mint Green paint is well applied & striking, if that's your taste.
• The Headtube Badge - The riveted mounting and slightly off-radius curve of the badge make it look cheap. State could have used a more cost effective decal placed directly underneath the clear coat instead.
• Medium Size Fit & Ride Feel - At 6'-1", the medium sizing was very much as described by State. The ride does feel lively at this size for my height, and it hides the weight of the steel well when riding.
• New Cable Routing Revision - This latest release replaces the previous semi-internal cable routing with full external routing and clamping. This is a great, highly practical revision for easier maintenance, though the included three plastic clamps feel a bit cheap—time will tell if they last. It feels like a cost-saving measure to avoid paying for extra factory welds, but a better choice would have been to simplify the headtube badge to save money there, and use those savings to match the higher-quality welded clamp types found on the rear stays or fork.

Component Swaps (Fork & Headset)

• Heavy & Harsh Stock Fork - While the stock steel fork is functional, it feels heavy and noticeably "dead" when riding. It transmits harsh impacts straight to your hands over bumps, prompting an upgrade to an alternate carbon fork to save weight and improve front-end dampening. State do offer alternate carbon forks, but as this is a budget frame & I'm a budget minded builder I purchased elsewhere. Personally I'd like to see an extra cost saving of 'No Fork' option, but realize State are probably buying a minimum package of fork & frame.
• Fair Headset Cost-Savings: - The included stock headset is of poor quality. While it did not require an immediate change to function, I chose to replace it with a simple $10 aftermarket upgrade. It's a fair cost-saving measure on State's part, as quality replacement headsets are cheap, and the aftermarket option is far superior in feel and smooth performance.

QC & Shipping Frustrations

• Unusable Rear Mudguard Mount - The rear mudguard mount arrived bent prior to painting, leaving it completely unusable from the factory.
• Cross-Threaded Pannier Mount - Quality control missed that the lower rear left pannier mount was cross-threaded when the factory mounting bolt was installed. It has since been successfully re-threaded, but it will require monitoring to ensure it holds securely under load.
• Shipping Damage & Prompt Replacements - Delivery was rough on this package. The frame arrived with small paint chips right at the headtube, which will need touching up to keep that Mint Green finish protected from rust. Additionally, both the seatpost clamp and the SRAM Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) took direct hits and arrived deformed. Fortunately, State very promptly sent out a new UDH hanger and seatpost clamp to complete the build and get things back on track.

Final Thoughts

Once you get past the initial quality control hurdles, swap out the lackluster stock fork for carbon, drop in an optional headset upgrade, and touch up the paint chips, this frame serves well. I do encourage State to get with their partners overseas & seek better quality control from the factory & most definitely better packaging, bubble wrap (none used) is not expensive & would have saved a lot of damage.

Affordable and great base frame for build

Bought a frame for a custom build. The original order missed out a few parts but the customer service team was really accommodating and resolved it quickly. Happy with my purchase.
