Zipp Service Course 70 Ergo Road Handlebar
Race fit without the race price

Zipp's shortest-reach Service Course bar, shaped with input from pro fitters and pro riders. 70mm reach brings the levers back where riders with smaller hands can actually use them from the drops, and 128mm of drop delivers a real aero position rather than a token one. Contoured top section spreads pressure across your palm on long days, with a 10° ramp that puts the hoods where your hands want them. 6061 alloy, bead blast black.

Race geometry and an ergonomic top, at a price that doesn't need justifying.

The Service Course 70 Ergo was shaped with input from pro fitters and pro riders, and it carries the exact fit numbers as Zipp's premium bars — 70mm reach, 128mm drop — with a contoured top section for all-day comfort.

6061 aluminum, 295g, bead blast black. Available in 38cm and 40cm center-to-center.

70 reach, 128 drop — what those numbers do

Reach is how far forward the bar extends before it curves down. Drop is how far below the tops your hands sit in the hooks. Together they decide whether your position is one you can hold, or one you bail out of after twenty minutes.

70mm is the shortest reach in Zipp's Service Course lineup. Traditional bars run 80mm or more, which pushes the levers far enough forward that riders with smaller hands are stretching to reach them from the drops — and a rider who can't comfortably reach the levers down there isn't really using the drops at all. Pulling reach in brings the controls back where they're usable.

128mm drop is genuinely low without crossing into territory only a flexible rider can hold. You get a real aerodynamic position at the bottom, not the token drop shallow compact bars deliver.

The combination is deliberate: low enough to matter, close enough to hold. If you've been on a deep, long-reach bar and only ever using the hoods, this is the geometry that puts the drops back into rotation.

The contoured top

Most of a long ride happens on the tops, and a round bar puts your hand on a small contact patch.

This one is flattened across the top section to spread pressure across more of your palm instead of concentrating it on a narrow strip. On a four-hour ride the difference is the kind you notice in your hands afterward rather than during.

Zipp specs the ramp angle at 10 degrees — that's the slope from the tops down into the bend, and it determines where your levers sit. A correct ramp means the hoods land where your hands naturally want them, with a smooth transition from tops to hoods rather than a step. 4 degrees of outsweep in the drops angles the ends slightly outward so your wrists stay straight in the hooks too.

Choosing 38 or 40

Handlebar width here is measured center-to-center — from the middle of one drop to the middle of the other. Some brands measure outside-to-outside, which reads about 2cm wider for the same bar, so don't compare numbers across brands without checking the method.

The old rule was matching bar width to shoulder width. That still works as a starting point, but the sport has moved narrower — narrower bars are meaningfully more aerodynamic, and most riders adapt to a size down from what they'd have been sold ten years ago without losing control.

  • 38cm — riders with narrower shoulders, anyone prioritizing aerodynamics, criterium racers wanting to get through gaps. Also the pick if you're on a 40 now and find yourself riding with your hands inboard of the hoods.
  • 40cm — the general-purpose width for most road riders, and the safer choice if you're unsure or coming off a 42.

Going narrower changes your reach. A narrower bar brings the hoods slightly closer and rotates them inward. If you drop a size, expect a ride or two of lever adjustment, and possibly a 10mm longer stem to get back to the same effective reach.

Aero extension compatibility

The 40cm is clip-on compatible. If you're building a bike that will run aero extensions for time trials, triathlon, or long solo efforts, order this width.

The 38cm is not rated for clip-on extensions. Don't mount them to it.

Why alloy

6061 aluminum is the workhorse alloy of the bike industry, and on a handlebar that's a feature rather than a compromise.

Alloy tolerates clamping mistakes. Overtighten a stem faceplate on a carbon bar and you can crush it invisibly — the damage doesn't show until it fails. Aluminum is far more forgiving of a mechanic in a hurry, survives crashes that would write off carbon, and gives you a clear visual warning if something's wrong.

On a part this size the weight difference against carbon is under 100 grams, and against Zipp's own 7050 SL version it's 35 grams. Whether that's worth double the price is a question worth asking honestly — the fit numbers are identical.

Bead blast black finish, understated on the bike.

Fitment

  • Clamp diameter: 31.8mm — fits any standard modern road stem
  • Width: 38cm or 40cm, center-to-center
  • Clip-on extensions: 40cm yes, 38cm no
  • Cable routing: External, under the tape

Confirm your stem is 31.8mm clamp before ordering. If you're on an older 26.0mm stem, you'll need a new stem as well.

Installation

Use a torque wrench on the stem faceplate and follow the values marked on your stem, tightening bolts evenly in a cross pattern so the gaps stay equal top and bottom. Uneven clamping is the most common cause of a bar that creaks.

Set your lever position before you tape. The flattened tops and 10-degree ramp are designed to put the hoods in a specific relationship to the bar — find the spot where the transition from tops to hoods is smooth under your palm, then check it from the drops before committing.

Full documentation and torque values are available in SRAM's service hub for this model.

Bar tape is not included.
