The Pros and Cons of the Entry Level Gravel bike

I wanted to get some miles on this bike before I did a review. I did! Got in some big gravel miles and epic rides and I feel like I can give a full review: I spent MONTHS shopping for a bike, looking online and GEO charts, and finally someone had a state bike in my size and I got to give it a test ride. Prior to this I was on a surly straggler. The bike felt great, has all the mounting points, and a more relaxed geometry compared to my more cross inspired surly. So let's get into it.
- Price: I mean for the price and what you get it can't be beat. Even if you buy different parts, and what not its still under the hood of $1,200 and you can have what you want on the bike!
- Customer Service: Honestly this is overlooked. The bikes are affordable, but the customer service is excellent. I couldn't get this level of communication with any of the large name brand companies. State is available, and they are willing to make it work if you need their help in regard to something!
-Parts: The new hydros felt great, the thumb shifter was solid, and the bike shifted correctly right out of the box. B-limit screw had to be adjusted due to the chain being a bit smaller than it should be, but that costed me nothing, and took 5" to do.
-New parts: I personally removed all the parts, cause All i wanted was this frame in the new turquoise colorway! SO the photos below are of my bike, with new parts, and nothing original but the frame and fork!
-Steerer tube: This is why it got 4 stars and not 5. The steerer tube is cut WAY to short. So much so that the highest stem bolt clamps sits well above the where the steerer was cut. A low cut steerer can't be fixed. You can't add any more spacers to the bike (only has about 30mm worth) if you wanted to bring the bars up at all you'd have to buy a new stem. I personally wanted to run 45-50mm of spacers after having a bike fit but that is not an options, and buy a short steep angled stem in my size was also not available so the only solution to get the bike to fit correctly was to buy a new aftermarket fork and cut the steerer to the size i want. I wish the steerer came longer and it was up to the consumer to decide how long they wanted it to be. Being that it has to be built at a shop, where they could cut the steerer it would be nice if they just shipped with one UN-CUT. So now I am in the process of looking for a steel aftermarket fork (don't want carbon) that the paint either matches close, or I would have to get it painted. Although that is not "required" you want your bike to look a certain way no, no matter how vein it sounds.
-Chainring: the 42t chainring it ships with is too big. They offer so many things when you check out, Saddle, Cages, Kits, Forks, why not offer an option to purchase a second chainring? or honestly give us the option to pick a chainring size? I just think more people would be happy if the bike shipped with a 36t. The audience for this bike is entry level, unless you are someone like me who changes everything. But generally i would say they are for people looking to dip the toe in the gravel pool. No on is going to need a 42t to go 25+ mph on a sprint, 36t is a better middle ground for climbing, and commuting around town. A begging cyclist doesn't know the difference it is up to state to decide what the bike comes with. I know Arizona is flat, but they have some hills!!
-650b tires: the 700c tires are just way nicer. The 650b tires are just too MTB oriented. They are also wire bead, which makes them NOT tubeless ready even though the wheels are. So that is another cost right off the bat that most people I would say would change.

Would I recommend this bike? 100%. My wife has one (changed out the chain ring and the tires) and she loves it. I bought one and sold my Surly straggler. It is a good bike, a GREAT bike, I just think a few things have to be changed. Would I be willing to pay more for different tires, and chainrings options, I think so. But the bike rides great, it climbs well, it doesn't feel like I'm riding a boat (insert 90's MTB name here), and it is really not that heavy! No heavier than any other steel gravel bike on the market.

Great Bike

This is the bike I have been looking for!! Comfortable, quick and versatile. Bought it with the carbon front fork. It's nice to be able swap out wheelsets so easily...one for road and one for off road. The hydraulic brakes stop on a dime. Love the shifter with the push and pull...very intuitive. The steel frame does a great job of absorbing the bumps on the rough roads I ride on. Looks great, too. Lots of compliments...especially for the guys at REI that assembled it for me. Customer Service - Chris Palmer deserves a big raise for helping me with my purchase.

GREAT Bike!

A couple hundred miles so far and REALLY enjoying the ride! I was looking to replace my Fairdale with something similar and came across the All Road. The thru-axel dropouts and the DT Swiss upgrade option sealed the deal. I swapped a couple items - pedals, handlebars were too narrow so I ordered the Wide Riser, 650b Barzo tires were too knobby so I went with Double Fighters, and I upgraded the cassette. Riding position is a little more upright than the Fairdale and is really comfortable. This is the most solid feeling bike I have been on in a very long time. The price point is amazing for what all is included… and the customer service is very responsive / top notch.
