An unbeatable budget wheelset

DISCLAIMER: I do not own a State Bicycle. So this is a completely unbiased review. That being said, I’d love to own a State bike, but I can’t drop the dough on a second bike. So, State, if you’ve got a used size 56 gravel bike kicking around the warehouse and want to get rid of it for a steal, let me know.
This is a review of the 650b version.

REVIEW:
I bought these as winter training wheels and wheels that I can beat the daylights out of. And I have done just that. After several months of gravel riding in an upstate NY winter, I can now say that I have put these through the wringer. So here’s my impressions:

THE BAD:
1. They’re not light. That being said, they’re also not super heavy. Kind of a mid-weight wheel.
2. They’re not especially fast. The power transfer isn’t spectacular.
3. They have silver nipples. This is a pet peeve of mine. Why in the world do wheel builders/manufacturers use silver nipples on an all black wheelset?
4. I was not particularly thrilled about the Vittoria tires.

THE GOOD:
1. The price. You will not find a deal this good anywhere. And I’ve tried. You can’t even find second hand wheels with a cassette, rotors, tires and tubes for this price.
2. The wheels come well packaged with rotors, cassette and tires installed. Nice touch. Oh, and they were true right out of the box.
3. They are legit “bomb-proof”. I have hammered the daylights out of these and they are not worse for the wear. I haven’t even had to true them.
4. The aesthetics are great. Very tasteful minimal branding.

THE FINAL WORD:
These wheels are a great buy unless you’re looking for race wheels. But I think it’s safe to say you didn’t come to this page thinking these would be race wheels.
If you’re looking for a set of quality, bomb proof, good looking (except for the silver nipples) wheels for training, Bikepacking, gravel grinding, or to swap between 700c and 650b, you cannot beat these wheels.
So, go ahead, put them in your shopping cart.
And I hope they carry you many miles.

Great value

Seems to be a great value add for the All-Road. Arrived with a badly bent disc brake on one of the 4 wheels, but easily remedied with the help of my LBS with no additional cost to me.

Great value in a wheelset

I got given a discount code because I bought the all road and they ran out of the “both” option. And it’s a great deal. The wheels required some minor truing, as to be expected, but overall they are good wheels and a pretty dang good value. I got the 650b’s with the tan wall tires. Those are not available with the 4130 bike, so it’s kind of cool to be able to get them by buying separately. Love the bike and the value. The 650b’s are great for riding on snow as well.

Love having 2 bikes in 1

The switching of the wheels is easy to do! The quick release is easy and fast and in under 10 minutes I'm ready to hit gravel or the paved trails.

Great Set of Wheels

When we got our second All Road 4130 I went with the 650b option. Our first one was 700c. The 650b look amazing and are awesome on dirt/rougher stuff. I actually even used them on a bikepacking trip with all asphalt and they were fine, but to be able to use the bike as more of a road bike decided to get another set of 700c for our second all road. Happy I did. It is a solid wheelset and you can’t the price for a quality tubeless ready wheelset, rotors, cassette, tubes, and tires. Very happy with this purchase. Love the flexibility to just swap out wheels and tires now instead of fully removing tires and tubes to swap. The wheels look great too and we’re true out of the box.

Plug and play

Rotor came trued, super easy swap on/off. Fits within my already attached fenders!

Chunky fun

So stoked I can get a second wheelset to swap out for some more trail fun. Arrived true and ready for inflation and ready to ride. Yet another reason SBC rules.

All Road means ALL ROAD

I purchased the 4130-All road with the 700c wheel set, I purchased the 650b set to have the ultimate setup.

After a few rides on the 700c wheel set I decided that acquiring a 650b would make more sense during certain scenarios. The wheels were trued and ready to be set up tubeless. The 700c makes the bike feel fast and super responsive, the 650b can still feel fast but even more comfortable and with more access to other terrain. Both wheel sets allow for more tire options. 10/10 would buy again

Great value

Lots of value here for the money. Perfect opportunity for me to test the waters with 650 without a huge financial commitment. Just a heads up to those without tools, etc, that the items will come separately packaged together without the rotors or cassette installed.
