4130 Trail - Mountain Bike - Hammered Tobacco Powdercoat

A Powder Coat That Takes a Beating

Hammered Tobacco isn't paint. It's a textured powder coat — applied dry, then oven-cured into a shell that's thicker and far tougher than any liquid finish. The hammered texture earns its keep twice over: deep metallic flake that shifts warm and bronze in direct sun, and a broken-up surface that swallows the scuffs and trail rash that would show as bright scratches on a gloss frame. It's a finish designed to look better dirty — which is convenient, because this is a bike you're going to get dirty.

Underneath it, the 4130 Trail you already know: double-butted 4130 chromoly steel for unmatched durability and ride feel, progressive trail geometry, UDH compatibility, and a legit RockShox fork. Built to rip, built to last, and built without the BS.

4130 Trail - Mountain Bike - Hammered Tobacco Powdercoat

Tough as nails and ready for anything, the State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail Mountain Bike is a no-BS trail machine designed to crush climbs, rip descents, and handle whatever you throw at it. Whether you're slashing singletrack, hammering urban shortcuts, or packing up for an epic bikepacking trip, this bike is built to send it.

And now it's four bikes in one. Pick the fork that matches the riding you actually do — a 130mm RockShox suspension fork, a rigid 4130 steel fork with mounts everywhere, a featherweight rigid carbon fork, or no fork at all if you're bringing your own.

*Bike pictured with Industry Nine Sector Carbon wheels and Seekrun S7 wireless dropper upgrades.

"A mountain bike of this caliber has no business being under $2,000."
— BIKE Magazine
Bikepacking.com found the 4130 Trail's geometry "quite similar to that of much more expensive bikes" — the payoff of an era where trail geometry has converged on something confidence-inspiring and genuinely high-performance, rather than something you pay extra to access.
— Bikepacking.com, "Inflation Buster"
Pinkbike noted the 65° head angle puts the 4130 in the same territory as bikes from their Value Bike Field Test, and that the steel frames aren't heavy even measured against higher-end steel equivalents — a well-appointed frame with a sensible parts mix and clear upgrade paths where they matter.

Choose Your Fork

This is the biggest decision on the page, and it changes far more than weight. Going rigid doesn't just delete the squish — it turns the 4130 Trail into a different category of bike. Read the handling note below the cards before you pick.

Standard RockShox Psylo Silver RC suspension fork on the State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail RockShox Psylo Silver RC — 130mm

This is the trail bike. 130mm of travel, 35mm uppers, a Motion Control damper and a Solo Air spring — at this price you'd normally get spindly stanchions and a shrug of a damper. Keeps the slack 65° front end that lets you point it down steep, chunky, rooted ground and stay off the brakes. If you ride rough terrain and want one bike that does all of it, stop here.

  • Travel: 130mm
  • Axle-to-crown: 550mm
  • Offset: 44mm
  • Steerer: Tapered 1-1/8" to 1.5"
  • Weight: 5 lb 12 oz
  • Mounts: None
$1,499.99
Rigid — Carbon Carbon rigid fork on the State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail Carbon Rigid Fork

This is the one that transforms the bike. 563 grams takes more than four pounds off the front end — you feel it the instant you lift the front wheel, and on every climb after. Carbon damps the high-frequency buzz that makes rigid forks tiring on hardpack. Combined with the shorter axle-to-crown, it's the fastest, liveliest version of this bike: a genuine all-terrain machine for dirt roads, bikepacking, and big mixed-surface days.

  • Axle-to-crown: 495mm
  • Offset: 49mm
  • Steerer: Tapered 1-1/8" to 1.5"
  • Weight: 563g (1 lb 6 oz with axle)
  • Mounts: 3 cargo per leg · rack (no fender mounts)
  • Standard: ISO 4210-M passed
$1,399.99
$100 less than suspension · 4 lb 6 oz lighter
Rigid — Steel 4130 chromoly rigid steel fork on the State Bicycle Co. 4130 Trail 4130 Chromoly Rigid Fork

This turns the Trail into a loaded ATB. Five cargo mounts per leg plus fender and rack mounts — more places to bolt gear than any fork we make. The shorter axle-to-crown drops the front end, so the bike sits lower and steers quicker: a dirt-road and bikepacking machine that still holds its own on singletrack. Steel takes abuse, shrugs off a scratch, costs the least to replace, and never needs a service.

  • Axle-to-crown: 492mm
  • Offset: 50mm
  • Steerer: Straight 1-1/8" (30mm cone included)
  • Weight: 4 lb 0 oz
  • Mounts: 5 cargo per leg · fender · rack
  • Rider limit: 120kg
$1,199.99
$300 less than suspension · 1 lb 12 oz lighter
No Fork Frame-Up — Bring Your Own

For riders who already have a fork they love, or who are building something specific. You get the complete bike, fully specced, minus the fork and headset crown race. Everything else is identical.

  • Head tube: Tapered
  • Front hub spacing: 15 x 110mm Boost
  • Designed around: 550mm axle-to-crown
  • Brakes: 180mm rotor — check your fork's mount
  • Not included: Fork, thru-axle, crown race
$1,099.99
$400 less than suspension
Going rigid turns this into an ATB. The suspension fork measures 550mm axle-to-crown. The steel rigid is 492mm and the carbon rigid is 495mm — roughly 55–58mm shorter. Dropping the front end that much steepens the head angle, lowers the bottom bracket, and shortens the wheelbase.

What you get is not a trail bike with the suspension taken off. It's a different bike: lighter, quicker-steering, and far more efficient everywhere that isn't a steep technical descent — dirt roads, doubletrack, bikepacking routes, hardpack singletrack, and the commute in between. That's an all-terrain bike, and it's exactly what these forks are for.

Pick suspension if you ride rough, steep, technical ground and want the slack 65° geometry the reviews above describe. Pick rigid if you want a fast, light, go-anywhere bike that you'll ride further than you meant to.

Both rigid forks ship with a 300mm uncut steerer and a 15 x 110mm thru-axle. The steel fork also includes the 30mm cone it needs to fit the tapered head tube, and a 180mm brake adaptor.

Weight by build

Measured without pedals. The carbon fork takes the 4130 Trail from a 32-pound trail hardtail to a 28-pound bike — a bigger swing than almost any other single part you could change.

Quick Features

  • Progressive Trail Geometry: A slack 65° head angle, low-slung top tube, and long front-center keep things stable when the trail gets rowdy while maintaining playful agility in the corners. (Suspension build. Rigid builds sit lower and steer quicker — see above.)
  • 12-Speed Shimano Deore Drivetrain: A tough-as-hell 1x12 setup with Deore M6100 shifter and rear derailleur, paired with an 11–50T cassette for big climbing range and clean, reliable shifting.
  • Double-Butted 4130 Chromoly Steel Frame: Tougher than aluminum and smoother than carbon, our double-butted 4130 Chromoly frame absorbs trail chatter and takes a beating without flinching.
  • Four Fork Options: Suspension, rigid steel, rigid carbon, or none at all. One frame, four very different bikes.
  • Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH): Future-proofed for modern drivetrain tech and easier maintenance, because you shouldn't be stressing parts availability.
  • Dropper Ready — Cabled or Wireless: A 31.6mm seat tube with internal routing means a cabled dropper drops right in, and the frame is equally happy running a fully wireless post with zero cables to route.
  • Threaded Bottom Bracket (73mm BSA): Reliable, creak-free, and easy to service.
  • More Mounting Points: Triple bottle cage mounts on the downtube — and with the steel rigid fork, five more per fork leg.

The drivetrain

Shimano Deore is the part of the lineup where the price stops mattering and the performance starts. M6100 gets the same shift ramps and chain management philosophy as the tiers above it, in a package built to survive being ignored.

An 11–50T cassette against the 32T ring gives 454% of range — a low gear at 0.64:1 that will get you up genuinely steep, loose climbs, and enough at the top for fire roads and flat transfers. One shifter, one derailleur, nothing to cross-chain, and no front shift to fumble mid-climb.

No drama, no fluff. Crisp shifting that keeps working when things get dusty, muddy, and questionable.

Soft and Supple Hardtail

This is a great riding frame. I buy myself a hardtail frame every year and move as many components over as I can, then buy the rest. Mine looks darker than the picture I saw when I ordered it, but great finish. I went from riding an aluminum hardtail with similar geometry to this one and it almost feels like I have a short travel rear shock. Very nice feel. I did have an issue with my Maxxis Minion 2.5s rubbing the left side of the yoke (I think that's what they call it where the stays connect to the seat tube). The tire only rubbed when I pedaled hard or put extra weight on the rear. I was able to dish my wheel over a little toward the drive side and now it's okay but I did eat through the paint to bare metal, so my next tires will be 2.4s max. Frame does not include a chain stay protector. Like a noob, I realized this when my chain was clanking around and took a bite out of my paint. I immediately bought an Amazon special peel n stick and fixed it. I think State Bicycle should make their own because I am sure it would look better with their bikes. Everything went together well. Bottom bracket threads were clean and confirmed 73mm and standard threads. The 44/44 (straight tube) headset gave me a little trouble, but I finally got it to seat nice and straight; the crown race included is a cheap one with a slit in it; I used the cane creek one I had on my fork already and it worked with the headset. I replaced the included QR seat post clamp with a NQR one but the one included was fine. Great ride. Climbs as well as it descends, maybe even better. Very easy pedal compared to my previous 29er with most of the same components. The cable guides under the top tube are the screw-in clamp-style kind are a bit fussy, and my brake hose seemed too large for them to clamp it nicely, but they work. The threaded holes for the chainring guard and the brake post mounts had a bit of paint that needed to be cleaned out, but I got done in a couple of minutes. This is my 3rd State Bicycle and my favorite as far as style and ride. Great quality. Very pleased.

Ode to the Trail 4130

Hear me, riders of mud and misery
I sing of a frame forged in chromoly fire,
The Trail 4130, breaker of chains (emotional ones),
Crusher of roots, derailleur of doubt.

Not carbon-frail nor alloy-aloof,
This steely steed stays true when others fail
It flexes where it counts,
Takes hits without losing its headtube,
And never ghosts you mid-ride like a flaky dropout.

Yes, it’s heavy
But so is destiny.
Besides, true strength comes from carrying your own weight…
And sometimes your buddy’s spare tube.

It climbs with stubborn grit,
Descends like a headbanging demon,
And tracks straighter than your excuses for skipping leg day.

O Trail 4130, patron saint of hardtails and hard times,
You keep my wheels turning when my motivation flats.
May my chain stay strong,
My brakes stay true,
And my courage never need truing.

Ride it till the spokes of fate sing
For this frame does not crack…
It only creaks ominously.

(This thing is dope AF! I am 6'2" and I run a 175mm dropper. I ordered the M/L and it is perfect. The insertion for the dropper is maxed out and somehow it fits me perfectly!!!) If you have doubts, cast them out.

Stable and forgiving for a not very experience MTBer

I picked up a frame only in large (6’0 tall) to replace an old niner air 9. That thing was 12 years old with geometry to match. I dabble in mtb/xc races, so i like fast, light, stiff bikes for the most part. Something about the niner with the steel head tube angle, 100mm fork, rigid post and aluminum really just combo beat the crap out of me, along with having a tendency to put me over the bars. Admittedly, I’m not the best mountain bike handler (keep me on the cross course!)

Anyway, i knew i needed a change. I looked at a few options. Knew i wanted to be at least somewhat singlespeed capable. I initially, that eliminated this one. Looked at some other bikes. Nothing really what i wanted for the price i wanted to pay.

Picked one of these up. Used an origin 8 revolver eccentric bottom bracket for bsa threads. That was enough to get me rolling. Raced it once. Ridden it a few times. It’s immensely more stable and feels far less scary than the niner. Took it down powerline out in Leadville yesterday and I’m still alive to write this review.

It isn’t as stiff or as fast uphill as the niner was, and is a bit heavier, but so far being less scared, and also staying ON the bike (instead of getting dumped off it) ends up being faster in the long run. I love it. Will keep at it.

Fantastic hard tail to start your addiction

I work at a shop that deals in State bikes, so I decided to order the 4130 mountain when it first came out. First impressions were solid. The Psylo fork and awesome geometry of the frame are top notch. The 4130 steel absorbs all of the abuse you can throw at it and feels much less rough on drops or tech trails when compared to an alum frame. I LOVE the gold patina, as it's more subdued in person than in the pictures. The wheels, wrapped with WTB Trail Boss tires are killer, tubeless setup was an absolute breeze and I'm happy to report no issues.

The bike gets 4/5 stars for a couple of reasons. First, the factory derailleur is a place holder for something better. Even with the clutch active I dropped the chain several times. The initial solution was an MRP chain guide. Second, the factory cassette. While the gearing range is perfect for where I ride, there are lots of techy climbs. The cassette did not survive, and cog #3 folded over in cog #4 during a climb. Finally, the derailleur took a bash that killed it. Swapped over to base level Deore 5100 for the cassette, shifter, and derailleur and all is great now.

My final gripe is that the crank set has to go if I want to add an aftermarket chainring. I have had the hankering for an AbsoluteBlack oval chainring, however the factory crankset is it's own pattern and will not fit any of their options. Luckily Deore is cheap and I'll be swapping that next!

Nice frame and geometry - Great value

Set this bike up as a trail bike with 27.5 tires and Fox 36, great quality frame with nice geometry. For the price point it is great. Would have given 5 stars but the internal cable routing for the dropper post is difficult, could be designed better. The metal guides for the internal routing fell into the frame and had to re-route the cable. Be careful when moving the housing too, it can get caught on the metal guides and split the housing.

Shred-ready trailparty bike-park-capable geometry in a purdy lil package

This bike is a great time, and I'm super pleased with the build quality and geometry. I've been looking for a playful modern hardtail for a while. I have a full suspension trailbike and I miss the playful nature of a hardtail. I swapped all of my parts from that bike onto the 4130 Trail. The frame finish is good, and I had no surprises while building it up. The day after the build, I rode a bike park with some big berms, some gap jumps, pump track, etc. The bike was super fun and super predictable. It feels good, and there weren't any situations where it felt weird. I didn't really need to think about it at all, and that's a beautiful thing. I'm a big fan of what STATE does as a company, and I'm absolutely stoked to be riding this new entry into the MTB space. Oh...and it's a pretty bike. I've gotten loads of compliments on it. Keep it up, STATE.

Strange color GREAT BIKE

So I don’t know what universe this color can be considered gold… Everybody who sees it says it’s military green. That aside this is one of the best riding bikes I’ve ever owned. I’ve got over three decades of MTB experience and I’ve written a lot of things, but this is the best feel by far. Smooth, steel ride, quality, excellent geometry, the fork was a complete surprise, and the shift and turned out to be rock solid it’s light. It’s nimble. And climbs like a mountain goat on steroids. I am 6 foot five 250 pounds so a sturdy ride with this epic handling at this price point is not easy to find. I highly recommend this bike… Maybe in the purple though ;-)

Trail Bike

I am new to trail/mountain biking as I’ve been a long time road cyclist. This bike has been perfect for me as I am developing skills and enjoyment with this hard tail mountain bike. It very much meet my needs and it gives me something to really grow into in terms of a bike.

What a rad bike!

I've been wanting one of these for some time now. I am so stoked - I'd pictured it as an occasional bike for trail camping, fire roading, etc. Instead, I'm riding it several times per week. I've been riding DS enduro 29r bikes for years now, but never had a 29r hard tail MTB. This bike is so cool - proper trail-capable geo and a very sturdy stance. This pup doesn't flex like an XC minded frame. I got the Eagle Transmission upgrade only. Then upgraded to 4-pot brakes, dropper and SQ Lab carbon bar. Such a killer bike-- I've been riding it a ton. I'm 6'1", 185 lb and got the XL. Perfect ride fit and acceptable standover clearance. The bike actually came with 165mm cranks. But State graciously sent me a replacement in 175mm at no charge. Excellent customer service.
