Can a $900 bike complete a bike-packing race?Back at it again in the reviews. After a few tuning rides the Raw 4130 was ready to take on DOOM, 404 miles / 46,000’ of Ozark magic. With the assumption that riding a full rigid was an unspoken right of passage, the rig was set for it’s first (my first as well) ultra bike race. With monster clearance and running 650b/2.35 wheel/tire combo, the State handled the chunk way better than I could. She was fully loaded with an overall weight of probably 60lbs and didn’t falter once. I blew through both my front and rear pads but mechanical hydros proved to be insanely easy to field swap on a picnic table at Kingston Station. A slightly modified shimano (J05?) pad fits perfectly and honestly you should just replace the original pads immediately. I ran them till they died., so they are not terrible. Hunt Mason x Adventure wheels were nice to have and improved my confidence against an untested and slightly heavier State wheel-set but I wouldn’t say it is completely necessary. The State derailleur was operational but touchy due to an underpowered clutch (IMO) and I swapped it with a GX before the race. The indexing wasn’t perfect but it could be managed with the State 12spd shifters. I opted for a smaller chainring but the stock State ring is a keeper and resembles a Wolf Tooth ring.

In summary: Yes you can get a Doom worthy rig for under a grand! I would swap brake pads, seat, and wheels upon arrival if you got them but if you don’t the state wheels work just fine!

I’ve since de-bagged her, opted for a 46t chainring and some hunt aerodynamicists to see how she handles a crit! Post crit review to come.

When purchasing a sub $1K bike these days it does cause a bit of hesitation. I was on the fence between an All-Road and a Specialized Crux and ultimately decided that I truly wanted a steel frame and mechanical everything. I am so glad I did! I was setting the bar low and expecting this thing to feel and perform like a thousand dollar bike and I was completely blown away. The State groupo is nothing to shy away from and I honestly enjoy it just as much as my Sram Force groupo. Once the brakes are bedded in properly these brakes rule. Shifting is so crispy and easy to adjust. The bike overall handles like a dream, so responsive and the geometry resembles my Canyon Ultimate which I was abusing as a gravel bike on 33s. The ample room with the 650bs on this steed is what dreams are made of. Currently running 2.35" Specialized FastTraks and it feels like a speedy monster truck. On it's debut ride I got swept out by a fast stream and almost lost the bike. Completely soaked, finally upright and not a battery in sight, the 4130 didn't care at all and got me home with no issues. Love this bike, excited to see what it can do at Doom in Arkansas later this year!

These huge wheels just looked sick on the 4130 so had to share with the homies. Buy a 4130. Then maybe buy these wheels. 32mm internal width, 2.2 SaintAnne on the front / 50mm Updraft on the rear.

This State 4130 All-Road offers excellent value for its price. The geometry and comfort are top notch; a real pleasure for long distance rides on pavement or gravel. While the welds in the frame are a bit rough in some spots, they are acceptable given the affordability. The stock Sensah G12 drivetrain works fine, but upgrading to the SRAM AXS completely transformed the bike. Especially the brakes. I would highly recommend to spec the bike that way from the start. With plenty of room for upgrades and a few thousand trouble-free miles behind me, I’m very happy with my purchase.

I wish that i had better things to say after a couple shake down rides. Braking performance is just terrible, gives zero confidence being able to stop the bicycle riding anything technical or with any pitch/speed. The second may be just an "is what it is." With a 700x45 gravel tire there are barely millimeters of clearance between the top of the tire and the fork below the steer tube, any kind of muck will add a drastic amount of rolling resistance. Aside from that it seems to have good build quality, I enjoy how clean the internally routed cables and availability to add a dropper post are. The add on wheel set was also a great value!

I'm loving my 4130 All Road! This is the first new bike I’ve bought in over 27 years. The last was a Nishiki mountain bike purchased in Japan in 1997. It’s been years since I’ve ridden it and wanted to get back into riding again. My cousin, an avid biker recommended going to a gravel. After researching and comparing different bikes, I chose this 4130 All-Road. Mostly stock, I did upgrade the drive train to the 11-50 mullet cassette and opted for the wheel set bundle getting both the 700s and 650s, great decision. Since I live in the valley, I was able to have it assembled and picked it up at the warehouse. Nick S. let me know when it was ready (less than a week). Very accommodating, he worked with my schedule to be available. Great personable guy, Nick went over everything on the bike and how it all worked by demonstrating everything I needed to know. A world of difference from my over 25year old bike. It handles great, shifting is phenomenal. After a few rides and the brakes were broken in, they work great, I couldn’t be happier. Swapping the wheels is a cinch, couldn’t believe how easy compared to what I was used too. After about a half dozen rides, the last on a jeep trail with the 650s I started to have issues upshifting to the largest cogs on some steep hills. Contacted Nick at SBC and he told me to bring it in as soon as I could and he would be ready to check it out. He made some adjustments and then took it for a long test ride. It was working but Nick wasn’t completely satisfied with it, Nick replaced a cable and another part. Deemed it good to go for me. Nick is a great rep and asset for SBC and customer service has been the best.
I definitely recommend to anyone looking for a great riding bike to go to State Bicycle Co.

Man, I never understood the steel is real meme until I got the 4130 all road. I had the older version, absolutely loved it, and now the new one which is even more refined. I love the way the bike rides. Everything is super smooth. I got two wheel sets and I'm gonna say the 4130 with 650b wheels is the most comfortable combo I've ever ridden on gravel.

I'm very happy with this bike. I bought the frameset the day the new UDH model was announced. I knew they would sell out quickly. The build quality is wonderful and the bike fits & rides great. The shipping was fast and packaging was sufficient. I'm running a 38t front chainring with 11x48 10 speed MicroShift Sword groupset. I'm 6'0 tall and I got the Medium frame and run a 100mm stem, it is perfect for me. I built it up with 700c wheelset and fit up to 45c tires (Maxxis Rambler) I settled on 38c tires with fenders. The bike rolls great, and feels predictable in all terrain. I'm very happy with this purchase, and would highly recommend it.

This is the first new complete bike I bought in over 15 years. I would usually buy a new or used frame and build it myself. I wanted a gravel bike (after riding an old 'cross bike for years). Purchased with all the standard components, no upgrades, except the mullet gearing. First ride and it hit on all cylinders. I put my SPD pedals and saddle on for comfort, but everything else worked great. I've never been bike packing, but I'm seriously considering it with this. I live less than 10 miles from a state park, so I may need some more racks before that but, it would be a perfect weekend trip. I am looking forward to many more rides.Thanks
